A Note from Mrs. Brown
8/27/12
Dear ECC Families,
When you receive this you will have already attended our back to school nights. I hope that your experience was positive and that you left with information to answer all of your questions. My ultimate goal this year, after student safety, is that communication is clear so that both parents and students have what each needs to be happy in school each and every day.
Tomorrow we will celebrate the beginning of the year with our Spirit Assembly. For those of you who are new to us, we meet on the last Friday of each month at 8:00 for a twenty-minute assembly. Students sit with their classes at the lunch tables and parents are invited to stand along the sides and back area. During these assemblies, we try to recognize individuals for their efforts, introduce new programs and celebrate positive happenings here at school.
Immediately following the assembly, there will be an informal volunteer orientation in the auditorium for any and all parents wishing to join in the fun in some way. Following that, stay for the first PTA General Meeting. The PTA Board members will share noteworthy information and it is the best way to truly understand the importance of the union we have here between staff and parents. Finally, be sure to join me at the Dad's Club Ice Cream Social from 5:30-7:30. The social is sincerely my favorite event as everyone is relaxed and families get the opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones.
Have a wonderful three-day weekend,
Carrie Brown

PTA News & Events
Volunteer Tea PTA General Meeting
Our first meeting will be held immediately following the spirit assembly tomorrow, Aug. 31 and in conjunction with our annual Volunteer Tea. Please join us to learn about various ways you can contribute to your school and children's education. Please click here for the proposed agenda or contact Katrina Young with any questions.
Room Parent Orientation
An informative Room Parent orientation meeting will take place after the Volunteer Tea (around 8:45AM ) tomorrow in the auditorium. Topics to be discussed are class communication, teacher relationships, collecting money, and the calendar of events for the year. Christy Monko, our Room Parent Mentor, will bring her Room Parent binder to share ideas with the group as well.
Mission 2 Save
Do you want help teach your child about the value of saving money? The ECC PTA and Mission Federal Credit Union are teaming up again to allow students to open personal bank accounts and make deposits conveniently at school. Deposits (no amount is too small) will be collected before school whenever there is a Spirit Assembly, beginning tomorrow, August 31. Look for the table outside the front gate. Applications will be available. For questions contact Debra Kirkwood.
Caught Being Good Starting Sept. 1, we will be kicking off our "Caught Being Good" incentive program. Based on the seven pillars of character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship), teachers and/or consultants can "catch" students demonstrating one (or more) of these character traits. Every student who is caught will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win fun prizes and gift cards.
Book Fair
ECC's annual Scholastic Book Fair will be held in conjunction with conference week this year (Sept 17-21). We are looking for one more volunteer to assist our chair. This is an easy and rewarding way to give back to your school. Our Book Fair is the sole source of revenue for our Media Center materials and a great way to promote good reading habits at school. Please contact Mamta Malhotra to learn more about this position.
Help Wanted - Arts Attack Several Arts Attack Supply Room Helpers are needed to keep tabs on art supplies. Helpers will keep track of supplies that need to be restocked and will help maintain a tidy and organized supply area. The time commitment is only 20 minutes every other week. Contact Melissa Van Loan or Jill Puccinelli if you are interested.
Help Wanted - Garden Science
Beginning next month, each K-3 class will have one Science lesson/month taught in our school garden! Similar to Arts Attack, parent volunteers will teach fun, yet easy science lessons in the garden using the acclaimed Life Lab curriculum. Please sign up with your teacher if you are interested in volunteer teaching this program. It will be fun! Contact Kathy Hacker with any questions.
Odyssey of The Mind
Volunteers are also needed to launch this renowned program at ECC this year. A training session for any prospective parent coaches and/or volunteers will be offered Sept. 29 at Mission Estancia. Please contact Julie Thompson for more information.
Allen's New York Pizza Restaurant Nights
Mark you calendars! Sept. 12 and 13 are Allen's Pizza Nights. Give yourself a break from cooking during conference week and order delivery, dine-in or take-out and Allen's will donate 20% of all proceeds to ECC. No need to bring a flyer, just mention your from ECC (no coupons please).
Yogurt Dream Fridays
Tomorrow Yogurt Dream is giving back 20% off your order back to our school! Just mention that you are from ECC anytime between 11AM and 9PM. No flyer need just mention you're from ECC. (Please no coupons.)
Recycling Update:
1. Last year ECC made of $2,000 from families bringing in their redeemable recyclables. We're starting the program back up on Friday so don't forget to bring in your CRV cans and plastic bottles! We will be collecting redeemables at the front gate, back gate and Kinder gate at drop off. Also, thank you to La Costa Valley, who is now donating the redeemables from the Valley Club to ECC!
2. Thank you to all the families that donated their trash cans! We collected about 100 old trash cans, and converted about 50 of them into "recycling bins" and placed one next to each trash can on campus. having the opportunity to recycle at each location around school will reinforce our determination to be as GREEN as CAN BE. (The remaining 50 trash cans went to Jodi Greenberger/Park Dale Lane Elementary. She appreciates the donation very much.)
3. Did you know that the students at ECC are expert recycling sorters? EUSD is in the process of implementing a lunch food waste sorting system at all of their schools. ECC was the second school to receive the "SCRAP" cart and our students are now expert sorters! They separate fruits and veggies (i.e. worm food for our vermicomposting bins), recycling (plastics and paper bags), redeemables (CRV) and trash.
School Garden Update
1.Our school garden is off to a successful season! Our crops were planted in June and now they are thriving with huge corn plants, watermelons, tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, winter squash, cucumbers, cilantro, and basil. Our first official harvest was collected by Mrs. Brazier's class on Monday and served in the school salad bar on Tuesday! Many more harvests to come!
2. Our school and garden was selected by EUSD to host a Garden-based Nutrition Education Workshop in October. This workshop is open to Nutrition and Garden educators across Southern CA, it is a privilege to host this event!
3. ECC was awarded a $1,500 grant by the Western Growers Foundation to support our School Garden. The money will be well used toward our new Garden Science program (see above).

ECC FUND
The ECC Fund is ECC's branch of the Encinitas Educational Foundation (EEF), a private, non-profit educational organization which is the primary source of funding for our school's Science, Music & Technology programs. Without your tax-deductible donations, our school simply would not be able to retain the credentialed consultants who provide several hours of valuable hands-on instruction to our students each week.
Our annual fundraising goal at ECC is $100,000, which is the minimum amount we need to raise in order to pay the salaries of our consultants and provide much needed classroom grants. Approximately 95% of all proceeds donated to The ECC Fund stay on our campus, and all monies are appropriated through our School Site Council, which is comprised of Principal Brown and elected ECC teachers, staff and parents.
The ECC Fund has several fundraisers scheduled this year, the largest being our Fall Pledge Drive which we are officially kicking-off at the Spirit Assembly on Friday, August 31. Each Family who donates $50 or more will receive an El Cmaino Creek license plate. To participate in the Early Bird Drawing, donate $50 or more before 5:00PM on 8/31 and be entered to win a $100 Best Buy gift card. For another chance to win, LIKE the ECC Fund on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ECCFund for a chance to win a $50 Target gift card, drawing to take place at 5:00PM on 9/28.
Donations can be made by placing a check made out to "The ECC Fund" in our ECC Fund lockbox located in the main school office or online through the link provided on the school website. More information about our Fall Pledge Drive and other fundraisers; such as Girls' Night Out at the Belly Up on Sept. 28, La Costa Valley Halloween party and the ECC Carnival, is available Here. Donation forms are available HERE and in the school office or go directly to our ECCFund online donation page.
For other questions, please email ECC Fund Chair Lynda Wennerstrom. Thank you for your support!
