A Note from Mrs. Brown
8/21/12
Dear ECC Families,
This summer, I had the good fortune to be able to take a three-week camping trip through the Western Unites States and up into Canada. Each morning, I would set out on the road never knowing what I would discover, see, pass or learn from. I was often surprised, but not often disappointed, similar to the start of a new school year; the path ahead was the promise of something new and exciting.
And so it is this year, our new and shiny faces passing through the arches each morning, ready to take whatever comes. Some children handle the changes better than others, but even the shy and introverted students usually make their way through the maze of uncertainty. And just like the discoveries on my camping trip, what once seemed difficult- setting up my tent, sleeping on hard ground, not showering for days, becomes easier through repetition and offset by the joy that comes from doing something one is passionate about. The kids may not realize it yet, but they are passionate about school. They each want to achieve, stand out and be noticed. They want to please teachers, parents and their friends. This translates nicely into a rhythm and routine where each child finds his or her own way, usually by about September 1st!
I am sharing this with you to ease your collective minds about the start of a new year. As unfamiliar and new as it may be, things always work out, they really do. With your support and continued trust in my staff, we will quickly be into the rich and rewarding days that are a part of the ECC experience. Trust us, all will be well!
See you at Back to School Nights next week,
Carrie Brown
P.S.- No school tomorrow due to staff development for teachers!

News From Dr. Reeve
8/23/12
Welcome back to another new school year! I hope that all El Camino Creek Families enjoyed their summer vacation and are off to a great start to a new school year. We are looking forward to a productive and exciting school year at El Camino Creek. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to say hello and making me feel welcomed. Please take a moment to read the following items that will assist us in the smooth running of El Camino Creek:
Kindergarten Gates
The gate next to Mrs. Groves' classroom in the kindergarten area and the gate located on the back parking lot by the food service building will be locked after the 8:00 AM bell sounds. Parents should leave the kindergarten playground by 8:00 AM so that our fabulous teachers can start their work with your wonderful students. Your cooperation will be appreciated.
Paseo Tulipero and School Parking Lot Exit
There will be a school staff member acting as a crossing guard at the exit of the main school parking lot. The crossing guard will only cross individuals at the driveway exit and not across Paseo Tulipero. There is no designated crosswalk at the intersection of the school parking lot exit and Paseo Tulipero. Individuals who cross Paseo Tulipero do so at their own risk and crossing is also considered "jaywalking".
Bicycle Rider Rules
1. Wear an approved safety helmet.
2. Follow traffic laws while riding to and from school.
3. Walk bicycle on school grounds during arrival and dismissal.
4. Do not ride bicycles on sidewalks.
5. Park and lock bicycle in designated bicycle rack areas.
Dogs on School Grounds
The health and safety of all El Camino Creek students is a priority at all times. As a reminder, dogs are not allowed in front of the school, in the parking lot and on the school grounds before, during, after school and on the weekends at all times. Your cooperation is needed and appreciated by all El Camino Creek staff members and families.
If you have any questions, please contact me in the school office. I look forward to working with everyone at El Camino Creek!

PTA News & Events
Volunteer Tea PTA General Meeting
Our first meeting will be held immediately following the spirit assembly this Friday, Aug. 31 and in conjunction with our annual Volunteer Tea. Please join us to learn about various ways you can contribute to your school and children's education. Please click here for the proposed agenda or contact Katrina Young with any questions.
Volunteering: A Student's Perspective
This year, the ECC would like our students to introduce the various programs this year to prospective volunteers. Click here for more information or simply have your student draw a picture and/or write a short paragraph (1-4 sentences) about why they love their favorite PTA program. All submissions will be proudly displayed at our annual volunteer tea.
Spirit Wear
Don't miss out on ECC's new Spirit Wear T-Shirts. Order forms are are due Monday, August 27th. You may turn them into the PTA box located in the front office (under Miss Christy's desk). Order forms are available on the PTA website and in the First Day Packets. Questions? Contact April Sands.
Tile Murals Stop by the Kindergarten playground to check out our beautiful new tile murals. Tiles purchased from last year's Art Fundraiser are now on display for for everyone to enjoy. 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade tiles are on the walls facing the playground. K, 1st and 2nd grade tiles are in the hallway leading to our new school garden. The PTA would like to thank the families that supported this event and for all our children for donating their artistic talents. Book Fair ECC's annual Scholastic Book Fair will be held in conjunction with conference week this year (Sept 17-21). We are looking for one more volunteer to assist our chair. This is an easy and rewarding way to give back to your school. Our Book Fair is the sole source of revenue for our Media Center materials and a great way to promote good reading habits at school. Please contact Mamta Malhotra to learn more about this position. The following are new programs that ECC is proud to offer this year:
Garden Science We will be offering a Garden Science program to grades K-3. Similar to Arts Attack, parent volunteers will teach fun, yet easy science lessons in the garden using the acclaimed Life Lab curriculum. Please consider volunteering for this exciting new program. A scientific background and/or green thumb is not needed. Just the ability to work with children. Contact Kathy Hacker with any questions. Odyssey of The Mind Volunteers are also needed to launch this renowned program at ECC this year. A training session for any prospective parent coaches and/or volunteers will be offered Sept. 29 at Mission Estancia. Please contact Julie Thompson for more information.

ECC FUND
The ECC Fund is ECC's branch of the Encinitas Educational Foundation (EEF), a private, non-profit educational organization which is the primary source of funding for our school's Science, Music & Technology programs. Without your tax-deductible donations, our school simply would not be able to retain the credentialed consultants who provide several hours of valuable hands-on instruction to our students each week.
Our annual fundraising goal at ECC is $100,000, which is the minimum amount we need to raise in order to pay the salaries of our consultants and provide much needed classroom grants. Approximately 95% of all proceeds donated to The ECC Fund stay on our campus, and all monies are appropriated through our School Site Council, which is comprised of Principal Brown and elected ECC teachers, staff and parents.
The ECC Fund has several fundraisers scheduled this year, the largest being our Fall Pledge Drive which we are officially kicking-off at the Spirit Assembly on Friday, August 31. Each Family who donates $50 or more will receive an El Cmaino Creek license plate. To participate in the Early Bird Drawing, donate $50 or more before 5:00PM on 8/31 and be entered to win a $100 Best Buy gift card. For another chance to win, LIKE the ECC Fund on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ECCFund for a chance to win a $50 Target gift card, drawing to take place at 5:00PM on 9/28.
Donations can be made by placing a check made out to "The ECC Fund" in our ECC Fund lockbox located in the main school office or online through the link provided on the school website. More information about our Fall Pledge Drive and other fundraisers; such as Girls' Night Out at the Belly Up on Sept. 28, La Costa Valley Halloween party and the ECC Carnival, is available Here. Donation forms are available HERE and in the school office or go directly to our ECCFund online donation page.
For other questions, please email ECC Fund Chair Lynda Wennerstrom. Thank you for your support!
