money   How to Make Your Money Last

The oldest baby-boomers are nearing retirement age, yet many of them still don't know whether they are saving enough or how to convert those savings into a lifetime of income.  If you're one of those 41 million boomers who are now 50 to 60 years old, the next five to 15 years will be critical.  That's when you'll need to consider your retirement savings options, focus on your investment strategy and figure out how to maximize your income during retirement.

If you want to have a comfortable retirement, the following steps should be considered:

1.  Get a Checkup.
As your priority shifts from accumulating money to receiving an income through retirement, you'll probably benefit from some financial guidance with help from a professional.

2.  Set Your Budget.
The possibility of running out of money is the main reason financial advisers urge you to limit the first year's withdrawal from your total retirement funds.

3.  Do a Dry Run.
Before retiring, see if you can live on your projected retirement cash flow for two to three years.

4.  Choose Your Date.
The age at which you retire depends on several factors, including whether you will continue to work after you retire.

5.
Consider an Annuity.  Current annuity products now offer the option to have a lifetime income rider.  This rider will allow you to enhance the pool of money that you would derive income from during retirement.  This pool of money can accumulate at a rate of 5 - 8% annually during the deferral phase.

6.  Roll It Over.
You should be in a better position to control your 401(k) money by transferring it to an IRA when switching jobs or retiring.  This will allow you to have more options and control of your money when determining distribution and investment strategies.

Energy drinks can raise blood pressure, cause faster heartbeat and lead to irritability, nervousness and nausea.  Many contain as much caffeine as one or two cups of coffee and as much sugar as one can of soda.  Some also include herbal stimulants.  An occasional energy drink may be a useful stimulant-but regularly drinking several energy drinks a day can damage your health.  Also: It is dangerous to consume energy drinks with alcohol or when you are dehydrated.  The caffeine and other ingredients can increase risk for fainting and even a heart attack.  (Source: Mayo Clinic Health Letter)

Exercise reduces risk of age-related eye disease.
Recent finding: Exercise helps reduce by half the odds of developing the wet form of macular degeneration, in which new blood vessels grow behind the eye, causing distorted vision and impaired sight.  Even simple physical activity, such as walking three times a week or taking the stairs regularly can help protect against the disease.

New research on the heart health benefits of pistachios means we can toss these popular nuts into the "party mix" of good-for-us nuts -- right along with the almonds, macadamia nuts, walnuts, cashew nuts, Brazil nuts and pecans we're already enjoying with no guilt. A study from Pennsylvania State University finds that these tasty nuts deliver a handful of cardiovascular benefits, more so than other nuts. (Source: Sarah K. Gebauer, PhD, the graduate student who worked on the study, currently a post-doctoral research associate at the USDA Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Maryland.)
