Information About EnOcean Technology
|
|
EnOcean's simple yet intelligent, self-powered wireless switches and sensors are powered by energy drawn from movement, light or even changes in temperature rather than batteries. This harvested energy is used for transmitting sensor data within a building to control lighting, blinds, heating or air conditioning without the need for cabling. In addition to its eco-friendliness, the technology is easily installed and maintenance-free, ensuring unparalleled flexibility at the lowest investment and operational cost for sustainable buildings.

| Letter from the Chairman |
|
Welcome to the premiere edition of EnOcean Alliance's quarterly newsletter. We are pleased to deliver right to your e-mail box news and updates about EnOcean Alliance ongoing activities related to the advancement of self-powered interoperable wireless building control systems. Alliance innovations create interoperable standard solutions, helping make buildings more energy efficient.
The market opportunities for EnOcean standard technology are rapidly growing. For example, the cost of raw materials-such as copper wire-as well as energy has doubled over the past two years. Adding complexity to this entire equation are increasing competition, tightening construction deadlines, rising labor costs, and an increasing need for flexibility. Across the globe the necessity to save costs, raw materials and energy, gains an ever-increasing momentum with individuals, companies, institutes, public offices and governments all playing their active part.
These issues converging together set the perfect scene to deploy EnOcean standard technology across the globe. Wireless and battery-less maintenance-free products can save between 30 and 70 percent on cabling, which results in significant construction time savings, and reduces building mess and rework necessity, while providing limitless flexibility in initial placement of switches and sensors and during any subsequent retrofit. In addition building automation systems, using EnOcean-based products can save about 30 percent in energy costs by intelligently controlling lighting, heating or air-conditioning. All in all, EnOcean-based products contribute to a major reduction in carbon footprints, costs and quality of living or work space.
The EnOcean Alliance founded in April by Masco, MK-Honeywell, Distech Controls, Thermokon, EnOcean, Leviton and Omnio to promote the wireless standard for sustainability, to educate and network the user community and to ensure the interoperability and user-friendliness of the products has already attracted over 60 active members. There are over 300 interoperable products available from over 60 different companies, with tens of thousands of buildings already enjoying the benefits of the technology - "No Wires. No Batteries. No Limits."
We hope you will continue to support us in making our world a better, safer, more comfortable and energy-efficient place.

EnOcean Alliance Q&A
|
|
|
Each edition, EnOcean presents a series of questions and answers with various members of our Board of Directors to educate our readers about each person's role and influence on shaping the Alliance's strategic direction.

Caroline Cadieux
Distech Controls
Promoter
www.distech-controls.com
Q: What is your role and responsibilities for the EnOcean Alliance? A: Since 2004, I have been the marketing manager for Distech Controls, a manufacturer of innovative building automation solutions. In 2008, we joined the EnOcean Alliance as Promoter-founding members, and I was named on the Board of Directors of the Alliance and elected treasurer. Furthermore, I actively participate in the EnOcean Alliance Marketing Work Group and our Research and Development Director Charles Gauvin, ing., is a participant in the Technical Work Group. Q: What about the EnOcean technology do you find particularly unique or interesting? A: Distech Controls was particularly attracted to the wireless battery-less technology developed by EnOcean. We first integrated the EnOcean receiver on our controllers in 2006 and were able to quickly offer a seamless wireless battery-less sensing solution for building automation systems to our client base. The technology presents many features that allow it to be readily integrated and commercially viable within building automation systems. Obviously, its main uniqueness comes from the fact that it is battery-less, using energy harvesting. But the availability of sensors and other wireless battery-less devices, really meant that this was a commercially available and viable solution that could be brought to market very rapidly. Q: What does EnOcean Alliance intend to focus on in the last two quarters of 2008? A: The EnOcean Alliance focuses on providing information on the features and benefits of the EnOcean wireless battery-less technology for all applications, ranging from building to industrial applications. As such, we are working to make known the products that were developed using EnOcean. It is important to promote the technology and its advantages, but more interesting for the general public, is the fact that products exist, work and are commercially available for immediate use. Q: Why is EnOcean technology, which plays an important role in supporting sustainable buildings, the technology to help buildings go green? The wireless battery-less technology is actually an important step forward for building automation. Building automation systems have always participated in making buildings "greener" by allowing for optimized use of energy, scheduling and appropriate monitoring, to name a few functions. Adding a wireless battery-less sensor or device to the building automation system adds multiple benefits, since the use of materials and cabling is reduced, no batteries are used and the building envelope does not need to be modified at the initial installation or for re-location to accommodate changing spaces (since no drilling or cabling is necessary). The wireless battery-less devices also allow monitoring of temperature, humidity and other functions in areas that traditionally could not be controlled, such as glass atriums or other spaces with intricate architectural features, since they can be installed easily on any surface. Again, this helps make these spaces and entire buildings so much more efficient as to energy usage/conservation and comfort with the added benefit of actually being a green technology. Q: What would you like members and prospective members to know about you either personally or professionally? A: As someone who has a marketing background and not an HVAC technology background per say, it is a great honor and pleasure for me to serve on the EnOcean Alliance board. All members bring something very interesting and a different view point to our conversations and thought process, and I sincerely believe that this Alliance will prosper into a rich resource for building and industrial automation industries as well as for the general public interested in green technologies.

The Radio Solar Presence Detector PM101
Omino AG announced the release of the Radio Solar Presence Detector PM101 with an integrated brightness sensor, it is a device based on the EnOcean technology. It sends a radio data telegram to radio actuators and radio gateways of the Ratio radio bus systems to turn energy consumers on and off (e.g., lights, shutters, motor-driven actuators).
The Radio Solar Presence Detector PM101 features two modes of operation with a total of five channels (4 x type PTM and 1 x type STM). Channels 1 and 3 evaluate the presence relative to the currently measured brightness, channels 2 and 4 evaluate only the presence and channel 5 sends all information (states of channel 1 and 2, current and stored brightness value). Energy is supplied through the conversion of room light into electrical energy by means of a solar generator; the electrical energy is stored in capacitors. Typical areas of application are semi and fully automated illumination control systems and occupancy detection / presence (e.g., in offices, school and conference rooms and shops). For more information go to: PM101.
Verve™ Living Systems
Masco Corp. announced the launch of Verve Living Systems . Verve Living Systems will initially include a groundbreaking new lighting control system that combines energy-harvesting and radio frequency technologies to offer wireless, battery-less lighting control that can offset builder costs and provide homeowners numerous lifestyle and energy-savings benefits.
Developed by EnOcean GmbH, a Siemens Corporation spin-off, the radio frequency technology utilized in the Verve system eliminates the need for wiring between lights and light switches. In this way it improves new home construction by reducing the use of copper wiring, which in turn lowers material and labor costs. At the same time, it eliminates the problems and inefficiencies of having to move or rewire light switches. What's more, because the switches are energy-harvesting, capturing energy from the simple movement of clicking the switch, they don't require any batteries.
Masco is a proud founding member of the EnOcean Alliance and uses it's standardized wireless control systems for sustainable buildings around the EnOcean energy-harvesting and radio-frequency technology.
