Orthotics and Proper Running Form
|
|
Spring is finally here, which means looking forward to sunny days, warmer weather, and an extra burst of energy coming out of Winter. Take advantage of the clear skies and grab your running shoes for a refreshing jog along the piers of San Francisco, take an adventurous hike along the Berkeley Fire Trail, or power up your GPS and go searching for "Geocaches" all over the Bay Area! Whatever gets you outside, proper footwear and form makes all the difference between a full day of fun and a long afternoon in pain.
Looking for something to keep you motivated while you're out? Build up your endurance and sign up for one of these events:
-For the runner: Start training early and go for 13-26 miles! The San Francisco Marathon, July 25, 2010
-For the walker: Grab your friends and start a team to help keep each other going! Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, July 10-11, 2010
-For the adventurer: As if Geocaching wasn't exciting enough, try the next level with GeoHashing. Check the website each day for a new set of coordinates! |
WHO SHOULD USE ORTHOTICS?
|
|
|
|
Almost anyone can use orthotics, ranging from children to adults. However, we have to keep in mind that everyone's feet are unique and that orthotics have to be specifically designed and custom fitted to each individual in order to eliminate the problem. An analogy can be made between orthotics and eyeglasses-both devices require detailed examination in order to determine the proper degree of correction or support needed.
Here are some of the most common conditions treated with orthotics:
- Flat feet, high arched feet
- Bunions
- Chronic heel (e.g., plantar fasciitis), knee, or low back pain
- Frequent ankle sprains
- Gait abnormalities (e.g., feet point inward or excessively outward during walking)
- Shin splints
- Morton's neuroma
- Ankle instability
- Diabetes and arthritis
The bottom line is that feet should not hurt. Presence of pain indicates that something is wrong and that should be treated before long term damage is done. |
