Labor Day is a federal and state holiday instituted by President Grover Cleveland in 1894 as a day of reconciliation between labor unions and the federal government, which had been openly hostile in pursuit of their separate goals.

In the north, Labor Day has been traditionally celebrated with parades and marches in honor of organized labor. In the south, where labor unions are few and "right-to-work" states predominate, Labor Day has usually marked the end of summer, and the beginning of school and football season. For people who are sartorially-minded, it is the last opportunity to white (shoes, hats, pants, etc.) until next Easter. Finally, for many people everywhere, Labor Day simply means a long weekend of families and friends getting together for food, recreation, and relaxation.

As Episcopalians, we are especially mindful of holy days, feasts, fetes and fasts, etc. Our calendars are overflowing with saints and memorable events we honor and venerate. Why can't every holiday - no matter how secular in nature - rather than just another "long weekend", be an opportunity to seek God's will in the time we have with each other. Regardless of where we are or the occasion of our camaraderie, it is always the season for reconciliation and forgivenes. That was the original intention for Labor Day in the mind of President Cleveland, and the longing for peace on earth is still all too present.

May you have a joyful Labor Day, in the spirit of Psalm 133: "How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!"

LABOR DAY

Trinity Episcopal Church will host a "Labor Day Weekend

Prayer Service for the Unemployed on Sunday,

September 4, 2011 at 5:00 PM in the Church.

All are welcome to attend this non-denominational service, providing our community with a unique opportunity to pray for the unemployed in Indian River County, the State of Florida and throughout the nation.

The offering will benefit the Treasure Coast Food Bank.

"We remember before our God and Father your work

produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and

your endurance inspired by hope in

our Lord Jesus Christ.

FOOD SUNDAY THIS WEEKEND

Please remember that this weekend is Food Sunday - The Salvation Army will be here on Tuesday (Monday's a holiday) to get our gifts for those in need. Be generous, as God has been generous to us! I am hoping that we can reach our goal of 500 pounds, which is easy to reach, if each one of us brings the equivalent of one box of spaghetti a week! Thank you!

WITH MUSIC IN MIND

Regular rehearsals of the Trinity Episcopal Choir will resume on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Music Building. The Trinity Choir always welcomes new members.

The Trinity Handbell Choir will resume rehearsals on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Trinity is hoping to grow this enjoyable and gratifying music ministry and is looking for additional members. The ability to read music is helpful but not required.

If you are interested in either the Trinity Episcopal Choir or the Trinity Handbell Choir, please contact Organist and Choirmaster Jason Hobratschk:

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL

Beginning September 18th, adults will have two choices for classes on Sundays at 9:00 am. Classes will be held in the Media Center and the Conference Room.

Fr. Jacobs will teach an Enquirer's Class for anyone new to Trinity or the Episcopal faith. It also serves as a great refresher course for long time Episcopalians.   The class will run through the beginning of Advent when a new class will begin.

The second class for adults will be a discussion of denominations and other faiths looking at the differences and similarities among Christian faiths and the various Protestant denominations. It will also look at the beliefs of Mormons and Jehovah's Witness followed by a brief look at religions from other parts of the world.

BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS

This blessing will take place on September 18th when Trinity's children begin the Sunday School Year, and will be part of that Sunday's 10 am service. It will set the stage for the Children's Sermons that Fr. Jacobs will be offering twice a month. It's a wonderful way to involve the children of our parish in worship. After the children's sermon, the youngest of the children may leave for childcare while the older children may return to the pews to sit with their parents.

YOUTH GROUP

Calling all Middle and High School youth! The first meeting of the newly-formed Trinity Episcopal Youth Group will take place at 4:30 p.m. Sunday September 4th in the Youth Building. Bring a friend! We'll watch a movie and Toni Houdyshell will lead a discussion over pizza and salad. Don't miss out on this exciting, brand-new program!
