One of our great Anglican poets, T.S. Eliot, drew inspiration from cats in writing Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, from which the musical "Cats" was taken. In honor of Trinity Sunday, the following is my poetic explanation of the Trinity, taken from Eliot's "The Naming of Cats":
THE NAMING OF GOD
The Naming of God is a serious matter,
It isn't just one of your seminary games.
You may think at first I'm mad as a hatter
(But please don't mistake me for a saint that is "latter")
When I tell you that God must have three different names!
First there's the name the church uses weekly,
One God, the Father Almighty - say it meekly!
Next there's the Son - as if you'd forgotten,
Our Savior, Redeemer, God's only-begotten,
Then comes the Spirit (we're down to the wire!)
Our Inspiration, Comforter, Sanctifier.
Names that never belong to more than one God.
When you notice your clergy in profound meditation,
The reason I tell you is always the same.
Their minds are engaged in the rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of God's name,
His ineffable, effable, effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable triune name.

NOTES ON THE NOTES: MUSIC FOR TRINITY SUNDAY
This Sunday, pianist Janie Gould will be playing a piano arrangement of Franz Schubert's beloved "Ave Maria" as the prelude to our morning worship. Many thanks to Janie, who has recently enriched our worship with her beautiful musicianship! Jason Albert will again be joining us to add the exuberant sounds of the trumpet to those of our magnificent pipe organ. He will be playing a "Trumpet Voluntary" by John Stanley (1712-1786) for the postlude. John Stanley was a London organist and composed, and he succeeded William Boyce as Master of the King's Musick in 1779. His success is all the more remarkable considering Stanly was blind from an early age. This work was originally part of one of Stanley's many voluntaries for the organ, but has since become a staple of trumpet repertoire, especially for weddings.
TRINITY WOMEN AND MEN NEEDED FOR A REWARDING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!!!!
The Outreach Ministry Group (OMG) is assisting the Children's Home Society in finding volunteers to work at their Summer Learning Enrichment Program for at-risk children aged 11 - 17. The program will be conducted every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday here at Trinity for six weeks, from June 20 through July 27. There will be 2 shifts per day (8:30am - 12:15pm and 10:30am - 2:15pm). Volunteers will check students in and out, hand out workbooks, serve snacks, and the like. This volunteer oportunity provides total flexibility---you can work one shift, one shift per week, or as many shifts as you want for the entire six weeks. If you're interested, please call Sharon Lear, Volunteer Coordinator at the Children's Home Soliety at 772-344-4020, extenson 231, or email her at sharon.lear@chsfl.org. Be sure to tell her that you are a Trinity volunteer.
