WHIITSUNDAY
Listen sweet Dove unto my song,
And spread thy golden wings in me;
Hatching thy tender heart so long,
Till I get wing, and fly away with thee.
Where is that fire that once descended
On thy Apostles? Thou didst then
Keep open house, richly attended,
Feasting all comers by twelve chosen men.
Such glorious gifts thou didst bestow,
That th' earth did like a heaven appear,
The stars were coming down to know
If they might mend their wages, and serve here.
The sun which once did shine alone,
Hung down his head, and wished for night,
When he beheld twelve suns for one
Going about the world and giving light. . .
Lord, though we change, thou art the same;
The same sweet God of love and light:
Restore this day, for thy great name,
Unto his ancient and miraculous right.
-George Herbert (1595-1633)
INCENSE AND PENTECOST
Since this Sunday is Pentecost - one our four high feasts of the year - we will have incense at our 10:00 AM Service. The incense symbolizes praise to God, the Holy Spirit.
NOTES ON THE NOTES
This Pentecost Sunday, Jason Albert will be playing trumpet for our morning worship. Jason is Band Director at Lincoln Park Academy in Fort Pierce and the coordinator for our Trinity Christmas and Easter brass ensembles. Sunday's prelude is the lyrical "Prayer of St. Gregory" by Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000). The 1946 work is built of expansive phrases that allow the soloist utmost expressivity and invoke a reverent peace. The postlude is the sprightly "Trumpet Voluntary" of Englishman Jeremiah Clarke (c.1674-1707). It is funny that the piece should so often be used for weddings, since it's composer literally died for love. Distraught at the unrequited love of a woman higher in station than he, Clarke committed suicide. Reportedly he considered both hanging himself and drowning himself, but when the coin he tossed to decide between the two landed edgewise in the mud, he decided on shooting himself - in the courtyard of St. Paul's Cathedral, London. Despite his suicide, he was buried in the crypt of St. Paul's.

FOOD SUNDAY
Our total weight of food given to The Salvation Army this past weekend was 225 pounds. Thank you for your participating, as your donation might have meant the difference between someone being hungry this coming week, or having dinner! Remember, food can be brought ANY time and left in one of the baskets in the narthex of the church or chapel. Thank you for helping!
