JESUS AND TIMING

In John's gospel more than the other three, we see Jesus having an unshakable acceptance and understanding of his identity as God incarnate, sent from heaven so that the world through him might be saved. On every page of John's gospel, Jesus is transfigured as the Word made flesh, his divinity beyond question. This raises confusion for many, however, as to how his humanity was revealed at the same time. How can one be of two natures simultaneously?

First, we know the humanity in Jesus was fully evident, precisely because whenever there was an epiphany - such as a miracle - the witnesses are nearly always astonished when reminded that Jesus was also divine.

Next, although Jesus is fully cognizant of his incarnate nature, there seem to be aspects of his calling that were withheld from him at various times. At the ascension with his disciples, for example, he denies knowing the timing of his second coming. As for his crucifixion, Jesus knows that he must suffer before entering into glory (and he will not listen to suggestions otherwise, from Peter or anyone else); that it would occur in Jerusalem; and that the Jewish religious establishment would be involved; but it doesn't appear he knew the exact timing as to when the crucifixion would take place. Even so, it does appear that on occasion, Jesus would receive a "cue" from God the Father - as when Phillip tells Jesus that some Greeks would like to meet him in John 12 - possibly intended to sustain and guide him through his sacrificial ordeal.

People often demanded that Jesus submit to human schedules, but he typically ignored such constraints, as in our gospel text this week on the raising of Lazarus. Instead of arriving when Martha expected him, Jesus waits for his "cue' to perform according to God's will, and not ours. From a human perspective, Jesus may not have always been "on time" - but he was never late - never too late to remind us that God is always in control, and that our faith may be measured by our patient acceptance of God's timing, to which even Jesus was obedient, "that the world through him might be saved."

TRINITY EASTER BRASS - SPONSORS STILL SOUGHT

On Easter Sunday, the musical forces of Trinity Episcopal Church will be augmented with a five-piece brass ensemble, the Trinity Easter Brass, and timpani.  Enhancing our worship services with quality musicians at Easter, Christmas, and other festival Eucharists taxes our music budget, but the expenses are well worth it.  No only do Trinity parishioners enjoy special music, but so do visitors to our parish.  With the Trinity Easter Brass, all should go out from our Eucharist not only uplifted, but exuberant.

The Music Department is currently seeking sponsors for the Trinity Easter Brass. The cost of each instrument is $250.00.  If you are interested in sponsoring an instrument, you may request the instrument you would like to support, or you may make a sponsorship to the Trinity Easter Brass in general.  If you are unable to entirely sponsor one instrument, partial or joint sponsorships are welcome. Sponsors will be listed in the Easter Sunday bulletin.  Thank you for considering sponsoring the Trinity Easter Brass, enlivening our Easter celebration; and supporting local musicians!

YALE WHIFFENPOOFS TO CONCERTIZE AT TRINITY

On the Tuesday after Easter, April 26, the Yale Whiffenpoofs will be giving a concert a Trinity Episcopal Church.  The Whiffenpoofs, founded in 1909, are the world's oldest and best-known collegiate male a capella singing group.  Save the date - more details to come!

EASTER FOOD DRIVE

You might recall that last year, thanks to your generosity, we had a highly successful Easter Food Drive. We'd like to continue that tradition of success this year!

Please share your blessings with a needy family by participating this year. Once again, we'll be supporting the work of The Salvation Army. You can pick up a grocery bag and list of suggested non-perishable items in the Narthex of the church and in the entry to the chapel.  Return your filled grocery bag by the weekend of April 16th & 17th. We also need contributions to buy the hams, so if you don't want to go grocery shopping, please make a contribution (either cash or check) - envelopes marked "Easter Food Drive" will be provided.

Thank you,
