A Tradition of Excellence at a Glance
Israel Progressing in Public Diplomacy
 by Prof. Gerald Steinberg

Prof. Gerald Steinberg For years, Israel's supporters around the world (and many Israelis) have cringed at the poor performance of government officials in the media, and the general failure in fighting the propaganda wars. While the importance of "public diplomacy" has been recognized by the United States and its allies in Iraq and Afghanistan, the responses in Jerusalem have been slow, to be charitable, until recently.

Zalevsky Receives International Prize and Distinguished Medal

Prof. Zalevsky When his parents left Russia in 1979 to immigrate to Israel, Zeev Zalevsky was only eight years-old and nobody could have foreseen what was to come. Today, the impact of the work of the 37-year old Bar-Ilan University Professor of Electro-Optics has been clearly seen by the international scientific community as he receives the 2008 ICO Prize & Abbe Medal.

The Second Revolution in Gender Studies
 by Prof. Tova Cohen

Prof. Tova Cohen In 1990, the late Prof. Dafna Izraeli initiated and led what deserves to be termed the first revolution in gender studies, when she established the Gender Studies Program for advanced degrees at Bar-Ilan University. Having earned recognition in Israel and abroad as a center for excellence and research, we launched the second revolution with a unique program in Israel combining theoretical learning with social activism.

Legal Aid Program Passes Knesset Bill
by Prof. Ruth Halperin-Kaddari

Beginb-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies The Legal Aid Program at Bar-Ilan University's Rackman Center for the Advancement of the Status of Women has managed to pass a bill in the Knesset requiring the Rabbinical Courts to keep written records of all their proceedings. Until now this matter was not regulated by law, but only through non-binding procedures which most rabbinical courts did not follow.

A Middle East Survival Guide

by Prof. Mordechai Kedar

Looking at the Arab reactions to the recent prisoner swap between Israel and Hizballah, it transpires that our enemies understand us better than we understand our own self-liquidation process.

Israeli time runs on a different watch than its enemies. An average Israeli government serves three years.  With such a short time frame, a government wants to make an impact and unfortunately operates under a sense of pressure that the other side quickly recognizes.
