Coming in October - Tuesday Nights!
Yale Political Science Professor Jacob Hacker and his colleagues have done research (economicsecurityindex.org) on "the percentage of Americans who have experienced a major economic loss over the past two decades." In many states, they report more than one fifth of the households had trouble in 2010. Summarizes Hacker, "This is not a pretty picture."
Let me be more specific. In the state of Florida, between 1986 and 2010, more than 22% of all families experienced a 25% or greater decline in income in a single year - a loss for which they did not have the resources to cover. Floridians were among the hardest hit in the nation! I would be curious to know what the statistics are for Lee County - which brings me to another point.
For our October Tuesday's Together (dinner at 5:30, speaker at 6:30), we will be examining the "crisis and opportunity" present in our community. On October 2, Scott Kashman, CEO of Cape Coral Hospital, will speak to the crisis in health care; October 9th, Samira Beckwith, CEO of Hope Hospice, will speak to issues dealing with aging; Joseph Burke, Lee County's Superintendent of Schools, will address educational issues on October 16th; and Sarah Owen of the SWFL Foundation will speak on October 23rd to the crisis in hunger and the ability/inability of the non-profits to respond.
We live in a time of "crisis and opportunity." Pray that we can keep the faith!
