Calvinism - The Reformed Tradition Presbyterians are part of the Reformed Tradition, a family of believers/churches that find guidance from the teachings of the reformer, John Calvin. Importantly, we do not worship or venerate John Calvin. In fact, Calvin did not teach anything unique. Everything he taught can be found in the teachings of Augustine or Luther. Nor did Calvin write any confessions or catechisms that we follow. His importance is primarily because of his emphasis on grace; Charles Spurgeon wrote "Calvinism is just a nickname for what we should call the doctrine of grace." Grace is the unearned, unmerited, freely given love of God. Calvin helped us to understand that our salvation (our relationship with God in time and in eternity) is totally dependent on God's faithfulness. To be a Presbyterian is to understand that we are loved by God before we are even born, and then, as we mature in the faith, to give grace to others, even "loving our neighbors as ourselves." God is faithful - all the time; and for this reason, we should all get a good night's sleep tonight!
In faith,

Pastor Tim
