Why?
At least once a day I ask myself why we are still engaged in the war in Afghanistan. At least once a day I find myself frustrated that I cannot come up with a satisfactory reason.
To put it another way, if my son died in Afghanistan would I have an answer for why he died? After ten years, what more is to be gained in this war? Given the great sacrifice of blood and treasure that our nation has been asked to commit to this conflict, I find the silence of our politicians, on both sides, alarming.
If the war in Afghanistan is necessary, tell us why! If the time has come to bring our troops home - do so quickly; do not ask another young man or woman to die for a mission that is over.
We cannot be naive to the threat of Islamic extremism; the perversion of Islam is a fact of life. The struggle against jihadist-fanaticism may last our entire lifetimes. But the question is whether or not the war in Afghanistan is counterproductive to this effort?
Why aren't our candidates for congress discussing it? Why aren't we? I hope to hear from you and learn your thoughts.
In faith,

Pastor Tim
