A NOTE FROM PASTOR TIM

The Gift of Hospitality

Middle-eastern people have a wonderful tradition of hospitality. Remember that Father Abraham (Genesis l8) entertained "angels unaware" - strangers who came to his tent seeking food and water. When Abraham offered them hospitality the strangers shared God's promise that Abraham would be the Father of a nation.

A gift that I have from our recent trip to Turkey involves hospitality. One afternoon, as our bus stopped at a scenic bypass for pictures, I found myself surrounded by children. We smiled, our smiles bridging the language divide. As one of the girls began to take a bite from an apple, however, I could see that it caused a young boy to look extremely uncomfortable; she was eating in front of a stranger without inviting the stranger to share her apple! Suddenly the little boy reached deep in his pocket and pulled out his apple, a bit bruised to be sure, and handed it to me with a wonderful smile. Immediately I understood. Hospitality demanded that he share his apple, even if it was his only apple, with the stranger.   What a gift!

Beware.... for we also may someday entertain 'angels unaware'.
