Down With Sound Bites!
My recent foray into the issue of stem-cell research reminded me again that applying our values to complex situations is not the same as reducing complex situations to 'fit' our values. To reduce the mystery of biology to a sound-bite (pro-stem cell or anti-stem cell) is inadequate.
For that matter, the Second Amendment leads us into a very thoughtful discussion too resonate for simplistic 'pro-gun' or 'anti-gun' labels. Isn't that also true with reproductive rights - 'pro-choice' or 'pro-life' are sound-bites that belie a myriad of underlying arguments and assumptions.
As the federal budget struggle continues, Congress also seems more adept at finding sound-bites than solutions. It would be refreshing if I heard a Congressman say, "To clarify a point - the person on the other side of the isle and I disagree about the budget, but that does not mean that he/she is a bad person, dishonest, immoral or a liar. While I disagree with my colleague I respect him/her. He/she is as deeply patriotic as I, and we pledge to you to work together to do what is best for the country we both love."

"While Christianity does not give specific answers to specific social problems, it does shed light on these problems, and we all must try the best we can to carry our Christian insights out into the streets and byways of life...What Christians in particular must remember is that moral outrage is a wonderful motivator but no formula for a solution."
