The Glory of God
Religion today seems a mix of popular psychology and feel-good theology with the end purpose being self-realization. "Have it your way" is more than a slogan for a burger-chain; it passes as discipleship. What if? What if God was not the self-help guru who helps you give up chocolate for Lent, but is an unfathomable God, indifferent to the petty, self-conscious needs that consume us?
The season of Lent invites us deep. Jesus did not preach a self-centered salvation but challenged us to be holy, even to follow his example of sacrificial love. Only when we throw our own egos on this cultural "bonfire of vanities" can we die to our false-self that our true self may be liberated by Christ.
May Lent bring you to utter silence before a God "in light inaccessible, hid from our eyes." May the Glory of the Lord consume us!

"In many ways, death would have been far easier to accept than love. It always is. Ever distrustful of grace, I assent more readily to beingdestroyed than to being loved. It's too much to presume that I might be the object of God's deepest longing, profoundly loved by that which frightens me most."
