 400 Years Young

In 1604, a royal mandate was given to come up with a new translation of the Bible. Not just any translation, but "to make a good one better, or out of many good ones, one principal good one." The writers succeeded! Published sometime in 1611, the "King James Version of the Bible" has stood the test of time.

As we celebrate the 400th anniversary of publication, it is hard to overstate the impact that the "King James" has had on western civilization - and, indeed, world civilization. For many, this was the only translation they knew growing up. And even though today the number of translations would fill a bookshelf, we still find ourselves returning to the King James version to read our favorite passages - Psalm 23, the Christmas story, the beatitudes, and others.

The language is simple, yet majestic. Enjoy!

Psalm 23 (King James Version)

1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
