 The Gift of Rust
One of the great treasures of the American religious scene is Martin Marty, professor emeritus at the University of Chicago. He has written so many books that the joke often told is that when you telephone him his secretary answers, "Dr. Marty is writing a book, do you want to hold?"

Dr. Marty tells the following parable: God created the world in six days, rested on the seventh, looked around and appraised everything "very good" and then, on the eight day, created rust, one of the greatest of divine gifts. Without rust, Marty explains, the world would now be nothing but a cosmic junk pile of things that never decay, never cease to exist.

Then comes the practical application: rust is good for mental health; it enables us to 'consign to oblivion' the irrelevant and the obsolete. Rust also allows us not only to forgive...but to forget.

Faith Ponderings...

"Forgiving love is a possibility only for those who know that they are not good, who feel themselves in need of divine mercy, who live in a dimension deeper and higher than that of moral idealism, feel themselves as well as their fellow men convicted of sin by a holy God and know that the differences between the good man and the bad man are insignificant in his sight."
