Martin Luther King (1929-1968)
As America pauses on this, MLK's birthday to reflect on the man and his message, I share a quote from William Sloane Coffin (Credo):
"It was Martin's message that it is not enough to suffer with the poor; we must confront the people and systems that cause poverty. It was Martin's message that you cannot set the captive free if you are not willing to confront those who hold the keys. Without confrontation, compassion becomes merely commiseration, fruitless and sentimental.
Likewise, King understood the difference between defiance and freedom. Confrontation to him did not mean the ruin and humiliation of opponents. Nonviolence to him represented an effort to give visibility not to our own poor powers but to God's everlasting love. 'Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name be the glory.' Nonviolence represented a chance for all parties to rise above their present condition.
Measured by feet, it was a short distance from King's pulpit to the streets of Montgomery. Measured spiritually, it was a long journey. But he took it, in the name of him who 'in those days...came from Nazareth to Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.'"
In Faith,

| We Care Food Ministry Update... |
GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS FOR WE CARE FOOD MINISTRY: The good news is that because of the generosity of 'the Faith Family,' 862 people were fed during the month of December (this number includes 362 children and 57 seniors). That Faith stepped up to the challenge is good news! The bad news is that 862 people found it necessary to turn to the church to be fed. Continue to pray that the economy in SW Florida improves! In the meantime, thank you for caring! |

Prayer Shawl Sunday, January 23
Prayer Shawl Sunday will be this Sunday, January 23, 2011. Everyone who has received a prayer shawl, along with all knitters, is requested to wear a prayer shawl to church on
that day to make others aware of the ministry. Let's fill our sanctuary with all the beautiful colors! Prayer Shawls are a blessing for everyone - both recipients and knitters. To date we have given out 1,184 prayer shawls. Prayers of faith, love, concern, and hope are knitted into the shawls. To join the group or for more information, contact Vicki McMillen at 541-0499.
