To Live From Above

Henri Nouwen (The Path of Freedom) writes about his near death experience that resulted from an automobile accident. "It is only in the face of death," he writes,"that I clearly saw, and perhaps only fleetingly, what life was all about." You, too, may have had such a mountain-top experience in life where, as Nouwen describes, you came close to "touching eternity."

Yet life does not allow us to stay on the mountain. "For me," Nouwen writes, "the question is whether my encounter with death has freed me enough from the addictions of the world that I can be true to my vocation: to live from above...The clarity of the meaning of life received on a hospital bed easily fades away when the many daily obligations return and start dominating life again. It requires an enormous discipline to remain a disciple of Jesus, to continue to stay anchored in his love, and to live primarily from above."

Stay anchored, my friends...stay anchored in his love!

Faith Ponderings ...

"It has been five years since I wrote down my experience in the portal of death. Looking back at it now that I am again fully immersed in the complexities of daily living, I have to ask myself, 'Can I hold on to what I learned?'"

(Henry Nouwen, from the Epilogue, The Path of Freedom)

Missions ...

megan johnsonMegan Johnson, Missionary

Megan Johnson, Missionary to Zimbabwe through NMSI (New Mission Systems International) is coming to Faith on Sunday, October 24, and will be joining us for dinner on Tuesday, October 26. Megan completed NMSI's COAT training in July of 2009 and is currently in Zimbabwe working with Farming God's Way, now called Foundations for Farming. She works with rural farmers helping them increase their profitability and sense of personal dignity and worth. Megan grew up in Worthington, Ohio, and attended college in Indiana. Megan's first longer-term experience with mission work began in 1998 when she went to Uganda and spent two years working with university students. During this time, her love for Africa developed. In 2003, she completed a Master's degree in Missions and Spiritual Formation. In 2006, Megan headed to Fort Myers, Florida, where she began a one-year agriculture internship with ECHO (Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization). During her internship, she took care of the Farming God's Way demonstration plot at ECHO's farm, and eventually traveled to Zimbabwe to learn first-hand from the founder of this powerful ministry.
