Do you remember the Cert's commercial of some years ago? One person argued that Cert's was a breath mint. The other person argued that it was a candy mint. And then, off camera, a voice intoned, "Stop! You are both right." That's how I feel about the proposed building of a mosque in New York City: "Stop arguing and listen to one another. You are both right." A fundamental reality of Presbyterians is that honest people can and do disagree. On the one had are the Constitutionalists - the promise of America, like it or not, grants us freedom, freedom to be offensive and freedom to be insensitive. We have always realized that to censure the unpopular puts us on a very slippery slope. On the other hand, equally valid, are those who in the name of mercy and compassion say, "Please, be more sensitive to these families; not here, not now." I remember when I lived in Chicago, a court ruling allowed the Nazis to march through a largely Jewish neighborhood - it was 'right' that they marched, but their insensitivity was abhorrent. While I understand that it is (and must be!) their right to build, I have a hard time understanding how people of faith can be so insensitive. That's my opinion - what's yours? |
