What Would Jesus Say?
 The Abortion Dilemma

I am sympathetic to those in the pro-choice movement. Women, and their bodies, have long been controlled by men. To assume that a woman is unqualified to make a moral decision about her pregnancy, to assume that a 'panel of experts' (be it doctors or a hospital board) should be authorized to decide whether or not a 15-year girl should be mandated to continue a pregnancy after rape or incest, or that a mother of three be compelled to continue a pregnancy when she is fearful that her life is imperiled, does not resonate well with me. "God alone is Lord of the conscience"; abortions need to be 'safe, legal, and rare.'

But I am also sympathetic to those in the pro-life movement. While abortions in this country are safe and legal, they are NOT rare. It is estimated that there were 1.3 million abortions in America last year. Common sense tells me that this number is high, very high; too high. Have we become casual about ending a pregnancy? Not all things that are legal are moral. So strongly do people feel about this issue that 6% of voters claim that restricting abortion is their 'single issue' in determining for whom they vote.

America is divided. Opinion within our congregation is divided. And so I ask you - what WOULD Jesus say? What do you think he would say? I would like to hear from you.

Mission Update ...
We Care (Faith's food ministry) again has good news and bad news. The good news is that our faith-community continues to be incredibly generous; this past month we fed 514 people, including 220 children. The bad news is that this is another record - up 11% over last month, and last month was also a record! In Lee County we are deep into this recession. Pray for those who are out of work and pray that God will continue to use Faith as a means of grace.
