The Problem of Evil & the NY Yankees
David B. Hart, writing in the August/September 2010 issue of First Things, opines that Yankee fans have a place in the providence of God. Hart argues that the Yankees ("that dastardly franchise") are a spiritually necessary part of the game, and that "Yankee fans have their necessary role to play, and - although we may occasionally think of them as "vessels of wrath" - we have to remember that they, too, are enfolded in the mercy of providence." Never have I been called a "vessel of wrath" with such eloquence. And to those of you whose baseball teams continue to languish, hear what Hart says about his own beloved Baltimore Orioles: "The time of tribulation is upon us, and we now must make our way through its darkness, guided only by the waning lights of memory and the flickering flame of hope, not knowing when the night will end but sustained by the sacred assurance that whosoever perseveres to the end shall be saved." May you enjoy the summer game! |
