Fiscal Patriotism
I must admit to being surprised to learn that a group of wealthy citizens wants to see their own taxes raised as a patriotic duty to ensure a stronger economy and a revitalized middle class. The organization (www.wealthforcommongood.org) seeks to end the 2001/2003 tax cuts on the nation's richest individuals. They argue that while the middle class pays taxes through automatic payroll deduction,'wealthy investors and global corporations game the system. They lobby lower rates and loopholes into the tax code.' As some of you wait for your blood pressure to return to normal, let me offer some thoughts for your musing:
-
most of us think that taxes are already too high
-
most of us think government is inefficient in spending what they already receive
-
the current system is unfair (Warren Buffet's famous quote that those who work for him pay a much larger percentage of their income to taxes than he does)
-
deficits cannot be ignored - government must either spend less, tax more, or both
-
paying our fair share is a patriotic duty; having a system that is not fair is an injustice
Now...which one of you wants to calculate what is'fair'? |
