Decadence
Peter Drucker and management are often synonymous. Forbes magazine was once so effusive in their praise of him that they called Drucker "the most perceptive observer of the American scene since Alexis de Tocqueville." The other day as I was thinking about the proposed expansion of our sanctuary, I thought to myself, "Do we really want to go through another major building project?" Then I remembered that one of Drucker's guiding principles for modern business management is that an organization begins to die the day it is run for the benefit of the insiders and not for the benefit of the outsiders. Think about this in terms of the church - once we become self-absorbed we lose our vision. One definition of decadence is to be indifferent about transferring values to the next generation. The church that exists only for its members has lost touch with Jesus. In other words.... my question was answered! May Faith be faithful. |
"Any religion that professes to be concerned with the souls of men and is not concerned with the slums that damn them, the economic conditions that strangle them, and the social conditions that cripple them, is a dry-as-dust religion."
Martin Luther King, Jr. |
