Wrestling With Faith

"Epaphras...is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, and be mature."  (Colossians 4.12)

In the first century, wrestling was an honest-to-goodness sport - not something contrived for television. The wrestling ring was called the agone, and the wrestlers were called antagonists.

Wrestling is the word-image that St. Paul uses for prayer. Like a wrestler going into a contest, Epahras, an elder in his church, was 'always wrestling in prayer' for his people. Life is a contest; we often wrestle with doubt, fear, and anxiety.   Similarly, we are told that Jacob wrestled with the angel all night for a blessing (Genesis 32.24-310); so, too, did Jesus pray so fervently in the Garden of Gethsemane that his sweat became like drops of blood (Luke 22.41-44).

During this season of Lent, you and I are called to 'wrestle' with all the things that prevent us from being fully committed to Christ.  As a resource, Tuesday nights, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. (repeated Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m.), I am conducting a wrestling-class.  Please join us that we may "stand firm in all the will of God and be mature!"

May this Lenten season bring us closer to God.
