Money
It is very difficult for people to talk about money. Years ago, churches devised the 'every member canvass' in which members of the church would visit other members, in their homes, to discuss how they made their decisions. Great idea! But despite the best of intentions, it failed. People would not open up. Money talk is private talk; these visits became not a time for honest conversation but rather an 'every member solicitation.'
Faith's stewardship campaign is most unusual, if not unique. People are not asked to pledge a dollar amount; we are asked to make a promise to God, to write down the percent of our treasure we will trust to God in the coming year, put it in an envelope, seal it, and put it in a container without anyone else seeing it; later in the year, it is mailed back to us as a reminder. That's it. It is about faith and about trusting God.
Money represents a critical test in the church's integrity. The way we raise money says much about who we really are. Are we really about building disciples or about fund-raising? The church must be different from other institutions; I believe Faith is.
February 28 is promise Sunday. |

"Your money or your life? Not a simple question, since most people can't seem to differentiate the two. Just read the dollar signs. Forty percent of Americans think about money more often than sex. Fights over money are the number-one source of marital discord."

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As the eyes of the world turn to Haiti, let us join our hearts in prayer:
God of compassion please watch over the people of Haiti, and weave out of these terrible happenings wonders of goodness and grace. Surround those who have been affected by tragedy with a sense of your present love, and hold them in faith. Though they are lost in grief, may they find you and be comforted. Guide us as a church to find ways of providing assistance that heal wounds and provide hope. Help us to remember that when one of your children suffers We all suffer; through Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives and rules this world with you. Amen. (Adapted from Book of Common Worship)

Ash Wednesday Service
Please join us this Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary for the Ash Wednesday Service. Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance and it marks the beginning of Lent. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent's way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. |
