Dumb Christianity

Consider:  Pat Robertson proclaims that the earthquake in Haiti was God's punishment for Haiti's 'pact with the devil.' Pat, it's not the first really dumb thing that you have said,  you also pontificated about God punishing the people of New Orleans by sending a hurricane; but I am surprised that by now a close friend wouldn't have taken you aside and said,  "Pat..."

Consider: The outlandish claims of the 'prosperity gospel' (a false teaching that insists that God wants everyone to be wealthy and promises that if you come to church and tithe, God will pay-you-back big time). The teaching is not harmless as explained by The Atlantic (December 2009); Hanna Rosin explains that the tens of millions of adherents to this 'gospel' were encouraged into extreme risk taking. They were told, explains Rosin, that they should reach high, buy a big house, take a big mortgage, "take the first step and trust God to provide." With so many people making such foolish choices, Rosin asks, "Did Christianity Cause the Crash?"

The problem is that this nonsense is even associated with Christianity. It has everything to do with greed and nothing to do with Calvary. Remember, Paul condemns 'false gospels' in Galatians. With the same passion that Paul demonstrated, perhaps it is time that we tell these folks that there is no room in Christianity for this heresy. Maybe you can't fix stupid, but please don't call it Christianity.

Faith Ponderings ...

"America's mainstream religious denominations used to teach the faithful that they would be rewarded in the afterlife. But over the past generation, a different strain of Christian faith has proliferated--one that promises to make believers rich in the here and now. Known as the prosperity gospel...it fosters risk-taking and intense material optimism. It pumped air into the housing bubble. And one year into the worst downturn since the Depression, it's still going strong."

We Pray for Haiti ...
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As the eyes of the world turn to Haiti, let us join our hearts in prayer:

God of compassion
please watch over the people of Haiti,
and weave out of these terrible happenings
wonders of goodness and grace.
Surround those who have been affected by tragedy
with a sense of your present love,
and hold them in faith.
Though they are lost in grief,
may they find you and be comforted.
Guide us as a church
to find ways of providing assistance
that heal wounds and provide hope.
Help us to remember that when one of your children suffers
We all suffer;
through Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives
and rules this world with you. Amen.
