Lazy Wind
The recent cold spell reminds me of a conversation between an American golfer who had gone to St. Andrews to play in the British Open and his Scottish caddy. The caddy was explaining the hazards of the 'old course,' and also warned the American to be aware of the cold, the probable rain, and 'a lazy wind.' Asked what a lazy wind was, he replied, "It is a wind that is too lazy to go around you, so it goes right through you."
We probably all felt something of that wind last week. And, doubtless, there are many who believe that life's troubles strike at us in the same way --- we might wish that they bypass us, but they don't. They go right through us.
So brave the wind and keep the faith. And to keep you steadfast, let me share something of John Calvin's thinking:
"...as keeper of the keys, the Lord governs all events."
"We must know that God's providence, as it is taught in Scripture, is opposed to fortune and fortuitous happenings."
"Certainty about God's providence puts joyous trust toward God in our hearts."
May God keep you warm and safe! |

"I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance."

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As the eyes of the world turn to Haiti, let us join our hearts in prayer:
God of compassion please watch over the people of Haiti, and weave out of these terrible happenings wonders of goodness and grace. Surround those who have been affected by tragedy with a sense of your present love, and hold them in faith. Though they are lost in grief, may they find you and be comforted. Guide us as a church to find ways of providing assistance that heal wounds and provide hope. Help us to remember that when one of your children suffers We all suffer; through Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives and rules this world with you. Amen. (Adapted from Book of Common Worship)

To support our brothers and sisters in Haiti contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Disaster Fund through Faith, or a direct link is also provided on the church web site (www.faithcapecoral.org). | |
