The recent spate of home robberies, moral failings of politicians, indictments of real-estate schemers, and Wall Street shenanigans that nearly broke the bank have caused me to remember "The Legend of the 36." There are, according to Jewish folklore, thirty-six honest people in the world. Thirty-six people with absolute integrity. They may look just like everyone else. They may be homemakers, retirees, college students, shopkeepers, teachers, farmers, or whatever. Whenever culture has been attacked in the past, the thirty-six have stood up and by their character have kept the world from rotting and going bad. The legend continues that each generation must produce thirty-six people with absolute integrity or the world will fall into debauchery. Who do you know that lives with absolute integrity? Who among us is salt to keep the world from rotting? Who is light to shine in the darkness? Who stands against the excesses of this culture? Let's pray that we have thirty-six of these folks! |
They can beg and they can plead But they can't see the light, that's right cause the boy with the cold hard cash Is always mister right, cause we are Living in a material word And I am a material girl You know that we are living in a material world And I am a material girl
