Now comes a new book by Thomas White and John Yeats that wonders if we are taking a fast food approach to ministry. Fast food restaurants are efficient, peer-tested and market-driven.
Franchising McChurch: Feeding America's Obsession With Easy Christianity, is suspicious that the church has succumbed to this consumer-driven culture. The music, the "high tech dazzle," the reliance on topical teachings, and franchising the brand name to a number of locations are all time tested...but are they faithful?
David C. Cook, the publisher, in a promo for the book adds: "Candid and compelling,
Franchising McChurch calls us back to the heart of Christ's church and shares the biblical design for delivering meaningful, life-changing ministry in a fast-food world."
I have mixed feelings. The church must speak to the culture and therefore must be relevant and compelling. My issue is not with style. My issue is with content. Do we now promise that people can "have it your way," that we'll get you "in and out without costing much," or do we challenge people to confess their sins and accept the forgiveness, grace and healing that comes only from Christ?
Same story, different format.
Something to think about as you enjoy these warm summer days...
