Woman and the Church

"The truth is that male religious leaders have had - and still have - an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. They have, for their own selfish ends, overwhelmingly chosen the latter.  Their continuing choice provides the foundation or justification for much of the pervasive persecution and abuse of women throughout the world."

So argued former President Jimmy Carter, as he recently ended his 60-year membership with his church because of their views on women. Carter finds it "repugnant" to believe that women must be "subservient" to their husbands; such teachings, he argues, give license to philandering, violence and national laws that omit rape as a crime.

It strikes me as odd that in the Twenty-first Century the Presbyterian Church (USA) is an exception, rather than the rule,  in believing that God calls "men and women to serve" and that husbands and wives are each subservient to Christ. Odd, to say the least...

That's what I think.  What is your opinion?
Blessings to all,

Faith Ponderings ...

"I have never been persuaded by arguments against the ordination of women.  The Vatican insists that there were no women among the original twelve disciples.  Well, there were also no Gentiles.  And as a Roman Catholic once asked, "If Mary could carry our Lord and Savior in her body, why can't a woman carry his message on her lips?"
