A Christ Centered Church: John Calvin
John Calvin wrote the Institutes when he was 28 years old. Amazingly, the Institutes are still used as a primer for seventy denominations around the world.
We all have, Calvin wrote, an insatiable hunger and thirst that causes us to chase after false gods: status, money, security, recognition, and power. Because the world cannot feed our hunger, we are led finally to ruin or to God. For Calvin, Jesus Christ is the key; in his commentary on Colossians he writes, "God shows us his righteousness, goodness, wisdom, power, in short, his entire self in Jesus Christ."
Today if you ask 'what is the core belief of the Presbyterian Church?' we answer not with creeds and dogmas, liturgies or sacraments, but with the central affirmation that Jesus Christ is the center. Jesus is the 'bread of life.' (By the way, Calvin will be the guest preacher at Faith on October 25 as we commemorate his 500th birthday).

"Jesus is both a mirror to our humanity and a window to divinity, a window revealing as much of God as is given mortal eyes to see...What is finally important is not that Christ is Godlike, but that God is Christ-like. God is like Christ. That's what we need to know, isn't it? Then we know how to pray -"through Jesus Christ, our Lord," who gives us the right and confidence to pray the way we do."

Hurricane Season has begun - please remember that Faith has developed an extensive Hurricane Disaster Preparedness Plan. We ask that each church family fill out a survey (click here for disaster survey form) so that we may know your plans if a hurricane/disaster hits our area. |
