Culver Summer Schools & Camps
PARENT UPDATE #3

Campers at Culver

IMPORTANT: Please note that Culver observes Eastern Daylight Savings Time! Keep this in mind when arriving on campus for Registration.

ARRIVING AT REGISTRATION
for campers arriving with parents/guardians

If your child is arriving to camp on Friday, June 22 or Saturday, June 23, your first destination is Registration. Registration will be open from 8:00 am EDT to 7:00 pm on Friday EDT and 8:00 am EDT to 5:00 pm EDT on Saturday.

Step 1: Arrive at Registration
Campers arriving with a parent/guardian should report directly to Registration at the Multi-Purpose Building on the main campus. If you are using a GPS device, select the option for Intersection and use Academy Rd and State Rd 10 in Culver, IN. (View on Google Maps) Or, use 1300 Academy Rd, Culver, IN. There will be signs on the State Rd 10 leading you to Registration.

Step 2: Enter Registration
After you park your vehicle, walk into the Multi-Purpose Building and you will be greeted at the first table. You will walk through the building, table by table, meeting with various departments to make sure all important information is covered (Health Center, Accounting, Uniforms, ID Cards, along with special interest booths). A barber will also be available for haircuts.

Step 3: Proceed to Unit Areas
After you complete Registration and your child has been fitted for uniforms, you can then proceed to the living units. This is where you will meet your child's counselors and see the living areas. Woodcraft families should get back in their cars and drive east on State Rd 10 towards the Woodcraft Camp entrance. Upper Camp families should proceed to their designated dorm or barrack. This information will be provided to you at Registration.

Parents/guardians can stay with campers until they feel comfortable to depart.
ARRIVING AT REGISTRATION
for campers arriving by air and/or bus

Upon departing the plane, campers must proceed directly from the gate to the baggage claim where Culver staff will be stationed, wearing staff polo shirts with the Culver logo. Travel time from the airports to Culver varies drastically depending on the time of day, traffic conditions, and construction work. Campers may experience a waiting period while the buses load. If a flight is delayed, this results in a delay of your child checking in with a Culver staff member.

When campers arrive at Culver, they will be guided through Registration by our counselors and then taken to their living areas to meet their unit counselors.

Please consider this information when calling Culver to see if your child arrived at camp. You may call the Upper Camp Officer-in-Charge (574) 842-8324 or the Woodcraft Headquarters (574) 842-8400 to verify your child's arrival.

Any change in travel arrangements should be communicated to the Transportation Director at uctd@culver.org.
TIME IS RUNNING OUT!
Mini Woodcraft Camp Prospects

For many alumni, a lifetime Culver relationship begins in the summertime. This year, as CMA and CGA alumni return to campus to celebrate with their friends and classmates, give your kids the gift of Culver with a trip to Mini Woodcraft Camp. Campers will play games, participate in activities, and stay overnight in real Woodcraft cabins. Plan your weekend today!

One session: May 18-20, 2012

If you have any further questions, would like to apply for Mini Woodcraft Camp, or see the daily schedule, please visit the Culver website or call the office at 574-842-8300.
GIRLS BLACK UNIFORM SHOES
for Woodcraft and Upper Camp girl campers

Woodcraft and Upper Camp girls are required to bring uniform shoes to camp. They should be black or navy in color with no embellishment or laces. The shoes should be flat, comfortable and preferably have a strap to avoid slipping off while marching. The uniform shop no longer carries these shoes for girls.

NEW CLASS OFFERED!
Sailboarding will be offered in Summer 2012

This summer Culver will be offering a new 1 period (3 week) Sailboarding class for all Upper Camp campers. The class will be offered 3rd and 4th cps to all those with previous sailing experience. Students learn the fundamentals of sailboarding in a safe and fun environment.

Learning includes:
  • Safety rules and self rescue
  • Board parts, board balance, rigging a sail
  • Wind direction, how a sail works, how to turn and steer the board, and sailing upwind

This class does not meet the sailing requirement for Naval School Midshipman. Each class is limited to a maximum of six students. If you are interested in signing up for sailboarding, you can sign up at registration with the Scheduling Office.

PERSONAL DRAWING ACCOUNTS UPDATE
All Campers

Remember that parents can check their camper's PDA balance online and in most cases reload the account with a VISA, MasterCard or AMEX credit card. Parents can access the website by going to the Summer Daily Bulletin and selecting "Personal Drawing Accounts" in the Accounting Department section.

Two important changes to the PDA process:

  • Due to new banking laws, the spending account can have a maximum of $2,000.00 (US). If you are trying to add money and the total in the account will exceed the $2,000.00 limit, the transaction will be declined because you are adding too much money.
  • Effective May 30, 2012, we're expanding the website to accept international credit cards from Mexico, Canada, and most countries in Central America, South America and Western Europe. When you select the option to reload (add money to) the account with your credit card, there will be a drop down menu listing the countries available for online credit cards. If your country is not listed, we cannot accept a credit card payment. Please contact Joan Heckford, the cashier at Culver. She can be contacted at (574) 842-8229.

If you have further questions about the personal drawing accounts or other accounting questions, please contact Dusty DeHerrera at 574-842-8227 or by email at deherrd@culver.org

HELMETS FOR CAMPERS

A helmet will be required for the following classes and activities:

  • Waterfront Classes (requires Culver's waterfront helmet)
    • All sailing classes
    • Water Skiing - including wake boarding
  • Other Classes
    • Challenge Course (helmets provided)
    • Equitation (ASTM approved - can purchase at Culver)
    • Fencing (equipment provided)
    • Ice Hockey (bring from home)
    • Ice Skating (helmets provided; or waterfront helmet)
    • Lacrosse (equipment provided)
    • Softball and baseball (helmets provided)
    • Wrestling (equipment provided)

The waterfront helmet will be available for purchase at Registration on opening days. It will be part of the Uniform issue as you go through the Registration line. No substitutes from home will be allowed. The waterfront helmet meets the CE EN 1385 Water Sports Safety Standard.

Campers are not required to purchase a waterfront helmet, UNLESS they plan to take any of the waterfront classes mentioned above. Also, if your child plans to take the Ice Skating class, you may consider buying the waterfront helmet to avoid the sharing of helmets at the rink. The waterfront helmet meets our safety standards for Ice Skating.

If purchased, this amount will be charged to your child's Tuition Account.

As we continue to be committed to camper safety and quality of instruction, the waterfront helmet is added to the uniform requirement this summer and is listed as a uniform item in the Parent/Guardian Guidebook for summer 2012 and beyond.

Thank you for your cooperation.

PILLOWS THIS SUMMER

Please remember that Culver does not supply pillows! The Uniform Department will have a limited supply of pillows in stock for purchase at Registration.

If you are bringing your child to camp, we strongly encourage you to pack a standard pillow for your child to use this summer.
