New Rule for Social Security and SSI

Beginning May 1, 2011, elders, veterans, and the disabled can rest a bit easier as a new federal rule kicks in that will limit creditors' ability to seize funds from Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), VA, and other federal benefits held in bank accounts in favor of direct deposit or prepaid cards.

Remember the buddy system? In extremely hot weather, get a buddy!

Remember the summers of your youth? There were all kinds of activities that required a buddy. We called it the buddy system. Swimming, hiking, camping, riding bikes, playing at the park....a buddy was always part of the fun and part of safety precautions.

High summer temperatures pose potential health threats for older adults, particularly for people without air conditioning. If you have a loved one, friend or neighbor who will be living in high heat and humidity this summer, get back to a buddy system! Check on your buddy twice a day! Get the whole family involved and have children, grandchildren and extended family check-in and on older adults who might be at risk.

Why is this so important? Because people over age 65 are more prone to heat stress than younger people.
