I was using the office copier one day and ran across a guide to the care and feeding of a hamster. (Someone was copying it.) As I looked through it, I realized that just as hamsters need special treatment to flourish, so do hotline attorneys.  So here, based on a guide to the care and feeding of a hamster, is a guide to the care and feeding of hotline attorneys.

California Senior Legal Hotline Expands

California

Over its 15 year history, the California Senior Legal Hotline has expanded and contracted numerous times as the funding tides ebbed and flowed. Last year the Senior Legal Hotline had to curtail its general legal hotline function to the local Sacramento area and limit its statewide services only to issues with specific funding streams, such as pensions and foreclosure counseling. Thanks to a U.S. Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women grant, the California Senior Legal Hotline can now operate statewide again on domestic violence. Some programs use their case management coding system to record the immediate impact of the hotline consultation on the client. This method looks at the service provided from the client's point of view. If the hotline advocate explained the client's legal rights or referred the client to a legal aid attorney, the immediate outcome can be identified as 'client obtained explanation of legal rights, client obtained referral to legal aid attorney.'
