WHO SHOULD OWN YOUR CAR?
| | By Robert Carowitz, Attorney, Legal Hotline for Michigan Seniors
Most people who are not married own their assets in their own name. For married folks, ownership is usually joint, as husband and wife. This makes good sense: married people have acquired what they own through their joint efforts and each wants an equal stake in the ownership. Moreover, joint ownership avoids probate when one of the owners dies. And, creditors of just one of the spouses can't reach these jointly owned assets owned by a husband and wife. | CHANGES TO FOOD ASSISTANCE PAYMENTS | | Benefits will be staggered throughout the month Starting in January 2011, the Michigan Department of Human Services will change the dates most people receive their food assistance benefits. This change will help grocery stores offer more fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products all month long. Instead of getting their benefits on a day between the 3rd and the 10th, people will be getting their benefits on a day between the 3rd and the 21st of each month.
The effect of the change means that beneficiaries will have more than 30 or 31 days between the amount of benefits they receive. So for some people, they might get their food assistance funds on December 3, but won't have another payment until January 5, which will be 2 days longer.
"As advocates for low income people, we are glad to see that there will be a greater selection of produce in local grocery stores and markets," said Kate White, Executive Director of Elder Law of Michigan. "We are concerned that people will have more days to wait to get their next month's allotment of food assistance. Families need to start planning now as to how they will make their food assistance stretch a bit longer for the six months during which they will gradually migrate to their new monthly benefit cycle."
