IMPOSING FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE PROTECTED BY THE LAW
|

By Susan Peters, Volunteer
Attorney Legal Hotline for Michigan Seniors If you have agreed to let friends or
family stay with you it may take more than a polite request to get them to
leave. It is not uncommon today for
adult children or other family members to move back in with mom and/or dad when
financially pressed. Friends may also come
to stay in times of need, especially in these tough times. Jobs are hard to come by and keep. Foreclosures are at an all-time high. Many people have come to rely on the kindness
of others to help them get by. If you
are contemplating opening your home to others - or perhaps you already have -
be sure all parties have a clear understanding of the arrangement. Hard feelings and legal repercussions are
more likely to result when the terms of a stay are left informal and
open-ended. Continue to the article (pdf)

ELDER JUSTICE NOW WINS NATIONAL MEDIA AWARD
|
|
AgeComm, on
behalf of the National Council on Aging, WITNESS and its national partners
including Elder Law of Michigan, garnered a gold award for the Elder Justice Now
campaign from the 2010 National Mature Media Awards, the largest awards program
of its kind. Over 1,000 entries were submitted.
The Elder Justice Now is part of a national campaign to create public awareness about
issues of elder abuse in this country. Elder Law of Michigan working in conjunction
with national partners identified elder abuse victims and advocates and shared
their stories through the use of video. In Michigan it is believed that there
may be as many as 80,000 victims of elder abuse. Abuse occurs in every part of
society. The campaign encourages community members to be on the alert for cases
of abuse and take steps to report it.
