AFTER-DEATH CARE: WHO MAKES THE DECISIONS?
By Susan Peters, JD, Volunteer Attorney,  The Legal Hotline for Michigan Seniors

As our population ages, so does the focus of its concerns.  While there are many topics of particular importance to the aging, none are of such universal concern as those relating to the inevitable: the end of one's life.  Concern over issues surrounding death and dying in Michigan has resulted in recent changes in the law that have spurred the ongoing debate advocating increased education and often lower cost alternatives to more traditional approaches to funerals and burial.

ONE FAMILY'S FIGHT AGAINST SCAMMERS

The first time a beloved relative in his mid-70s wired several thousand dollars to strangers, believing he was paying taxes on huge lottery winnings, it seemed like a fluke, a mistake he would understand once we straightened him out.

Then it happened again. And again.  Read the story

BANKRUPTCIES WORRY RETIREES
 Access to Justice

Phone lines at the Mid-America Pension Rights Project are busy with calls from retirees and current employees of General Motors, Chrysler and several auto parts suppliers who have filed bankruptcy in recent weeks.

Pension plan participants report receiving notices and, in some cases, claim forms from the courts involved.  Project attorneys speak with each concerned caller, explaining individual rights and advising the caller how to respond to court correspondence when necessary.  To further assist auto industry employees and retirees affected by these bankruptcies, project staff has compiled a list of weblinks to government agencies, employers, and informative news articles.  Click here for more information.

REPORT LOOKS AT UNPOPULARITY OF LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE

Price and complexity are major deterrents to purchasing long-term care insurance, according to a new report by the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured. The report, Closing the Long-Term Care Funding Gap: The Challenge of Private Long-Term Care Insurance, describes the results of a study of who is purchasing policies, how much they cost, and what features are included.
