Seizing Opportunity from Crisis

A Blackberry On Each Hip
by David Godfrey

blackberry At a recent staff meeting here at the ABA Commission on Law and Aging, a colleague asked why I had two BlackBerrys. The answer was simple: I am trying to establish balance between my work life and my personal life by carrying one on each side. Technology drives my world. In 2008, Senior Legal Hotlines helped 53,108 clients (with 20 hotlines reporting).  They assisted with 61,646 cases (with 22 hotlines reporting).

Thanks to all of the hotline staff, both paid and unpaid, that made a difference in the lives of seniors throughout the nation.

What a Difference A Hotline Makes
Stories from the Frontline

The [Maryland Senior Legal]Helpline was contacted by an Iranian Jewish senior who was ostracized by her family and the local Jewish community. She had so antagonized one of her sons that he resorted to violence and beat her severely. The lady was living in a shelter on donations from charities and a few out-of-state family members. The Helpline assisted the senior by connecting her with a victim rights attorney who represented her at her son's assault trial. The attorney was instrumental in the son receiving a sentence that restricted his contact with her and also with her husband, who was recognized as a family leader that influenced the attack on her. Last year the Helpline helped her obtain U.S. citizenship and public benefits. She now lives safely alone in the family house.

Keep up the good work!
