With the economic downturn, more people are purchasing used vehicles rather than new ones.  This is sending prices upwards while the supply of cars is decreasing.  Learn ways to help protect yourself if you are in the market for a new vehicle.

Elder Law of Michigan is excited to celebrate Law Day on Friday May 1, 2009 with a new and very special event.  The Board of Directors has created the Joe D. Sutton Call to Justice Award and the Vanguard Award for Contributions in Law and Aging. 
 
Please plan to join us for this time of celebration.  The luncheon event will be held on Friday, May 1st at the University Club at 12 noon in cooperation with the Ingham County Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan's Access to Justice Campaign.

 Attorney General Releases "Top 10 Consumer Complaints"
 
Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox recently announced the Top 10 Consumer Complaints of 2008Topping the list was credit and financial concerns ranging from credit and collection companies to complaints about mortgage bankers, brokers and predatory lending matters.  In addition to the list, Cox told of two new fraud scams that are becoming problematic.  These are car warranty scams and debt reduction scams.
 
Consumer Fraud Prevention Volunteer Recognized

Fraud FightersCongratulations to Consumer Fraud Prevention Project volunteer, Betty Wade, who was recently honored as a  nominee for the Capital Area United Way Volunteer of the year award. Betty has contributed over 150 hours to the Call Center since 2007. She is very faithful in her commitment and has a professional and personable approach as she engages consumers in conversation.  Congratulations, Betty!
National Healthcare Decisions Day 2009
 

Do you have an advance directive in place?  Have you discussed your wishes for life saving measures with your physician and family?   A grass-roots organization started an initiative to  to promote advance care planning and healthcare decision making.
Legal Hotline Adds Benefits Enrollment Center
 Benefits Enrollment Center
Elder Law of Michigan has been awarded a grant from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) to expand the Legal Hotline for Michigan Seniors by setting up a Benefits Enrollment Center. This additional program will help seniors throughout Michigan find any potential benefits that they be eligible for. Additionally, the Benefits Enrollment Center will help clients navigate the process of applying for the potential benefits. The Legal Hotline for Michigan Seniors will be partnering with two local agencies:  Covenant Community Care and Oakland Livingston Human Services Agency to provide face-to-face assistance.  The Legal Hotline for Michigan Seniors will be working closely with MiCAFE, another Elder Law of Michigan program, to help the clients apply for any potential state benefits.
