LAW DAY, May 1,
2009, Michigan State University Club, 12 noon, program at 12:30 pm
Elder Law of Michigan is excited to celebrate Law Day on
Friday May 1, 2009 with a new and very special event. The Board of Directors has created the Joe D.
Sutton Call to Justice Award and the Vanguard Award for Contributions in Law
and Aging. In 1958 President Eisenhower
proclaimed the first Law Day a "day of national dedication to the principle of
government under law." It is only fitting that we celebrate the milestone 50th
anniversary of Law Day with a tribute to one of Michigan's legal heroes, Joe D.
Sutton. Throughout the years, Law Day has engaged the public in discussion on
relevant issues that focused on enhancing knowledge of our governmental
structure and legal process. This year we focus on a theme that promotes the
rights and well-being of people living in long term care institutions (nursing
homes/Homes for the Aged/Adult Foster Care Homes) with a presentation on
Culture Change in Long Term Care.

Joe D. Sutton, Esq. was a member of the Board and long time supporter of Elder Law of Michigan. He had a passion for helping others and has been missed by many since his death last summer. Joe Sutton was Assistant Attorney General under Frank Kelley. He later worked as a private practice attorney serving the needs of older adults. Attorney General Emeritus Frank Kelley will be the master of ceremonies for the event. Joe's work embodied the principles that all people have the right to live with dignity and that they have a safe and nurturing environment in which to live. In order to carry-on his spirit of commitment and service, we are excited to create an award that will be presented annually on Law Day.
Please plan to join us for this time of celebration ~ it will be the place to be for Law Day. The luncheon event will be held on Friday, May 1st at the University Club at 12 noon in cooperation with the Ingham County Bar Association and the Access to Justice Campaign.
To request an invitation or a sponsorship package please email Penny Gamet at pgamet@elderlawofmi.org. To talk to Penny in person please call toll free 1-866-400-9164.
