County Moves to Reject Request for Commercial Passenger Air Service at Paine Field

On Friday, May 16, Snohomish County received a request (see below) from Allegiant Air, a Nevada-based commercial airline expressing an interest in beginning flights to Las Vegas from Snohomish County's Paine Field.

The council on Monday, May 19 introduced a joint resolution (see below) opposing commercial air passenger services from Paine Field, but due to the absence of two councilmembers, the Council choose to postpone final consideration of the resolution to June 4, 2008.

However, the three councilmembers present directed that a letter be prepared and immediately sent to Allegiant Air expressing our concerns.

The letter to Allegiant Air states in part, "we the three members of the County Council present wish to make clear to your firm and to our citizens our strong opposition to commercial air passenger services from Paine Field.

"In particular, we hereby state our commitment to preserving the 1978-79 Mediated Role Determination (MRD) and Snohomish County's subsequent reaffirmation of the MRD in 1989, 1992 and 2001.

"Furthermore, we are committed to oppose any Snohomish County budget actions that promote or facilitate commercial air passenger services from Paine Field.

"An understanding and appreciation of the long history of this issue makes clear our need to reiterate Snohomish County's commitment to protecting our citizens' quality of life."

County Imposes Temporary Zoning
to Protect Mobile Home Parks

Seeking additional time to find a means to halt a growing low-income and senior citizen housing crisis caused by the continuing conversion of existing mobile home parks to more lucrative commercial uses, the Snohomish County Council voted unanimously to impose a temporary, new mobile home park zoning category on the approximately 53 such parks in the unincorporated county.

Approved as an emergency ordinance, these zoning changes take effect immediately, but will expire after six months unless renewed.

"We need to find effective long-term solutions to this conversion crisis," said Councilmember Brian Sullivan. "This temporary zoning change offers a good time to get heads together and find some answers."
