January is National Cervical Health Awareness Month

 Teal Ribbon

According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2010 there were 12,200 new diagnoses and 4,210 deaths from cervical cancer in the U.S.

Although cervical cancer was once the leading cause of cancer death among women, over the past few decades, with early detection and the integration of the HPV vaccine, the death rate has decreased significantly.

Message from our Board Vice-Chair

New Hampshire's Response to the Commission on Cancer (CoC) "Survivorship" Standards

The creation and distribution of a Cancer Treatment Summary is a primary objective of the Collaboration. As Vice-Chair of the NH CCC Board of Directors and Co-Chair of the Survivorship Workgroup, I am pleased to announce that we have successfully created and piloted two Cancer Care Summary Templates available now on the NH CCC website.

Steady improvements in early detection and treatment

of cancer over the past 30 years have

Barbara Kimball, Vice-Chair of NH CCC Board of Directors
Barbara Kimball, Vice-Chair of the NH CCC Board of Director

resulted in a population of cancer

survivors within the United States that has reached 9.8 million people. Because the focus of attention has been targeted toward treatment of cancer, the unique needs of cancer survivors has been relatively overlooked.

In 2006, the Institute of Medicine in conjunction with the National Research Council, released its report, From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition. This landmark statement illustrated the need for a shift in focus from the length of time a person survives cancer to the quality of that time or how well a person survives with a cancer diagnosis. The Commission on Cancer (CoC) has responded to this need with the establishment of new "survivorship "standards of accreditation. Specifically, the CoC will hold cancer care providers accountable to support a patient's transition from treatment to follow-up care via comprehensive treatment summaries and care plans.

Two Cancer Treatment Summary templates (one for Medical Oncology and one for Radiation Oncology) were created by the Survivorship Workgroup to support the efforts of cancer care providers throughout New Hampshire in meeting these new standards. These templates were designed to provide a brief but concise description of an episode of care received as well as be adaptable for implementation in diverse cancer treatment centers. These summaries are a first step toward providing patients with critical treatment information that is portable and available for patients to share with other providers.

NH CCC Partners with the Melanoma Foundation of New England to Raise Awareness about the Dangers of Teen Tanning

Almost 400 new cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, are diagnosed in New Hampshire each year. Research and surveillance tell us the prevalence is increasing rapidly, particularly among New Hampshire females ages 15-39. This is likely due to unhealthy tanning practices and exposure to the harmful UV rays of tanning beds.

Your Skin Is In poster

Members of the NH CCC's Primary Prevention/ Sun Safety Workgroup have partnered, once again, with the Melanoma Foundation of New England (MFNE) to raise awareness about the dangers of teen tanning by supporting the "Your Skin is In" contest in NH.

NH CCC to Support Local Organizations Addressing Priorities for Reducing Cancer and Improving Care in NH

The New Hampshire Comprehensive Cancer Collaboration (NH CCC) has contracted with three local organizations to support projects that further key priorities for the Collaboration. Each project addresses an objective in the NH Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. Three of NH CCC's workgroups will be involved in these activities.

"We believe that by coming together to coordinate our efforts, we can better reach our goal of eliminating the incidence and suffering due to cancer in our state," commented, Nancy Kane, board chair of the NH CCC. "We were pleased to support three innovative projects addressing important areas for cancer prevention and treatment in New Hampshire."

The NH CCC will support the following organizations and projects:

  • New Hampshire Colorectal Cancer Screening Program: "Grandparents, Let's Get Screened"
  • Community Health Institute/JSI: "Engaging WIC (Women Infant Children) Participants in Tobacco Cessation"
  • New Hampshire Hospice and Palliative Care Organization: "Promoting Earlier Access to End of Life Care"

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month

Free Screenings Available

The United States Congress has designated January as Cervical Health Awareness Month. The New Hampshire Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) at the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) would like to remind women they could be eligible for free screening services through the "Let No Woman Be Overlooked" program.

The "Let No Woman Be Overlooked" program provides screening and diagnostic tests. Most women diagnosed with cancer through the BCCP are eligible for Medicaid to pay for the costs of treatment. Services are provided at the community level statewide through participating primary care offices, community health centers, and hospital clinics.

NH CCC Public Policy Education Committee Update

The Public Policy Education Committee was established this past fall in an effort to keep Collaboration members informed of important legislation and public policy changes. As we begin the legislative session, the committee is busy examining proposed legislation that may be supportive and in some cases contrary to the objectives outlined in the New Hampshire Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. As a committee we will be looking to other collaboration members for insight and expertise on issues that may affect your area of interest. By identifying common interests and bringing together knowledge and resources, this committee hopes to increase awareness and influence policy changes that will support healthier people and communities in NH.

The next meeting will be January 27. If you are interested in joining us, please email me at mike.rollo@cancer.org or info@NHCancerPlan.org.

We welcome you!
