Learning How to Create Positive Policy Change in New Hampshire
| |
Nancy Kane
NH CCC Board Chair |
On October 3, New Futures , a non-profit non-partisan advocacy organization working to advocate, educate and collaborate to reduce alcohol and other drug problems in New Hampshire offered a half day training for the New Hampshire Comprehensive Cancer Collaboration (NH CCC) entitled "Public Policy and Advocacy: A Smart Way to Effect Change."
Thirty five people attended, a response that surprised both New Futures and the NH CCC! The training addressed what public policy is and how one can influence it, what advocacy is vs. lobbying and what activities are included under each definition. We learned about how NH government functions including when and how to become effectively engaged in the process. It was an informative and energizing day and a great precursor to the organization of a NH CCC Public Policy Education Committee. To date, twelve people joined the committee that met in late October. The next meeting will be December 2. If you are interested in joining us and have not yet indicated your interest, please email me at nkane@crhc.org or info@NHCancerPlan.org. We welcome you!

November: Lung Cancer Awareness Month
November is National Lung Cancer Awareness month and marks the 36th anniversary of the Great American Smokeout on November 17th. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for both men and women in New Hampshire (NH), killing more people than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Tobacco use is the major risk factor for lung cancer. Other risk factors include environmental exposures (secondhand cigarette smoke, radon, asbestos), a personal or family history of lung cancer, and being over the age of 65. The best way to prevent lung cancer is by avoiding tobacco use, since no reliable screening test for early detection is known. Eighty-five percent of people diagnosed with lung cancer currently smoke or have smoked cigarettes in the past.
New Hampshire's incidence of lung cancer is higher than the US rate, both as a whole and when considered by gender. New Hampshire's overall incidence rate of lung cancer for 2003-2007 was 69.8 per 100,000 persons compared with the US rate of 62.6 per 100,000.

| November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Awareness Month |
In honor of National Hospice/Palliative Care Month, New Hampshire Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHHPCO) is hos ting their 16th Annual Fall Conference "Strengthening the Team for Change", at Southeastern Regional Education Service Center (SERESC) in Bedford, NH on Thursday, November 10. Keynote speakers include: Mary Pierce Brosmer, teacher, poet and consultant member of the Society for Organizational Learning ; Samuel Oliver, author and Chaplain / Bereavement Counselor at Amedisys Hospice; and Scott T. Shreve, DO, National Director of Hospice and Palliative Care Program for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Details and registration information can be found at www.nhhpco.org or call (603)415-4298.
Most Americans have heard about hospice care. They know that hospices care for people at the end of life. Last year, 1.56 million dying Americans were served by the nation's hospice providers and New Hampshire hospices delivered care to over 4,000 individuals. Research shows that families report a better quality of life under hospice and palliative care, but there's so much more to know.

| National Breast Cancer Coalition Sets Deadline to End Breast Cancer
by Nancy Ryan
NH Field Coordinator, National Breast Cancer Coalition
The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) has launched a bold, unprecedented initiative called "Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®," a call to action for policy makers, educated advocates, legislators, researchers
and scientists to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020.
- Why a deadline? Backed by a strategic plan, Breast
Cancer Deadline 2020® renews our sense of urgency about the breast cancer problem. Breast Cancer Deadline 2020® calls on stakeholders to focus new scientific knowledge about the biology, etiology and genetics of breast cancer on prevention and preventing metastasis, two areas of research that have the greatest potential to
save lives. - Why now? Incremental improvements in screening and treatment are not getting us to our goal of ending breast cancer. The public would be surprised to know that despite decades of awareness and billions of dollars of breast cancer research, breast cancer incidence and mortality have not changed appreciably. Twenty years ago, 114 US women died of breast cancer every day. Today that number is estimated to be 110. At this rate, it will take hundreds of years to end breast cancer.
