Call to Action: Create Positive Policy Change in New Hampshire
 | |
Nancy Kane
NH CCC Board Chair |
I am honored to have been elected Chair of the New Hampshire Comprehensive Cancer Collaboration (NH CCC). As I begin my 2 year term, I want to thank my predecessor, Lise Mendham, for her outstanding leadership. Her thoughtful and visionary stewardship helped us chart a clear course for the future. The priorities approved by the Board will guide how we focus our work over the next 5 years. Our five work groups and six standing committees are enthusiastically dedicated to these priorities. However, in order to fully achieve some of our priorities, policy change is needed. Educating our NH lawmakers needs to be a priority for all NH CCC members. You have the expertise, passion and experience to inform the decision making processes when cancer-related issues are before the NH Legislature. While not everyone may feel comfortable or be able to testify before a Legislative Committee on a specific bill, all of us can educate our communities and our elected officials about creating a healthier NH for our family, friends, and all NH citizens.
One of my goals is to establish an active and well-informed NH CCC Advocacy Committee. We are planning an advocacy training to learn about the many tools and strategies we have at our fingertips. We can influence our elected officials to craft the positive policy changes we need to create a healthier NH. No one can do this alone. But if we harness the collective voice of the NH CCC membership, we have the power to influence policies that affect all of us now and in the future. Please consider joining this effort. Email me at nkane@crhc.org or Judy Proctor at jproctor@healthynh.com if you are willing to help.

September: Prostate Cancer Awareness Month | September is prostate cancer awareness month. Prostate cancer can be cured if detected early and can be treated even in its later stages. Early detection of prostate cancer is possible with a blood test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and a digital rectal exam (DRE); men should discuss their risk and need for screening with their health care provider. For more information about early detection and other prostate cancer emerging issues, please refer to the NH CCC Emerging Issues in Cancer work group brief, "Prostate Cancer: Emerging Challenges."
NH CCC works collaboratively with hundreds of partners, including the New Hampshire Prostate Cancer Coalition (NHPCC), to share resources and implement strategies that address cancer. The mission of the New Hampshire Prostate Cancer Coalition is the significant reduction of prostate cancer deaths in New Hampshire, thereby raising the quality of life for men and their loved ones. Organized in May of 2006, the Coalition has a board of 14 volunteer directors; almost all are survivors who are both physically and emotionally invested in the fight against prostate cancer. Spreading awareness of the dangers of prostate cancer is a major goal. A speakers group of five makes dozens of appearances before service clubs and community organizations. Working with the state's six prostate cancer support groups helps NHPCC to maintain a close relationship with newly diagnosed men.
NHPCC members work with hospitals, primary care providers, urologists, lawmakers, and others in aspiring to be a true coalition of all the major forces opposing prostate cancer in our state. NHPCC President Steve Ladew commented, "We are proud to partner with the NH CCC in raising awareness about the dangers of prostate cancer and the importance of informed decision making.
