News from Westminster United Church

Greetings!

A Word from Rev. Sandra

Dear Friends of Westminster

I want to share with you some of my reading and vision for our church community.

In the most recent issue of The United Church Observer (our national magazine; subscription $20.00 per year) Christian Schwarz,  a German researcher and author,  set out to discover what growing Christian Churches share in common.

The eight characteristics are:
   empowering leadership,
   gift-based ministry,
   connecting with God,
   effective structures,
   inspiring worship,
   needs based evangelism,
   holistic small groups
   loving relationships.

I am delighted to say that at Westminster we are working diligently to encourage a church life that embraces these eight characteristics. We are seeing increased lay leadership and, through our strategic planning process, we have identified the need to have a committee structure that enables ministry, instead of restricting it. As your minister, I need to be sure that the business of the church is operating in an efficient and responsible manner. I take this seriously. We are most grateful to those who have contributed to the Furnace Fund $31,500.00, the operating budget, Mission & Service and Building Renewal. If you have not been active in the church over the last few years I invite you personally to attend a worship service  so that you may experience peace in the midst of a busy and confusing world. The congregation has dreams and visions. One such dream is making Westminster an accessible building to be inclusive.   Another dream is to revitalize our church to allow for traditional and contemporary worship services, programs and rentals. Our Finance and Stewardship Action Teams have really worked hard at helping us to understand our finances and the funds required to "do ministry". We were pleased that in December we had met our operating expenses. In fact, we were $6,000.00 to the good, BUT we cannot become complacent because we do not want the accumulated operating deficit to grow. Please be consistent with your giving. PAR is an excellent choice. When you are away...your givings still make their way to church. We do recognize for some that these are tough economic times and you need to make your own decisions. Relationships and being in communion with Christ are the most important aspects of church life. We also need to be committed to responding to what is required financially.

Our Annual  Easter Appeal (which is an appeal over and above our regular givings) will focus  on paying off the furnace loan to the United Church of Canada  in the amount of $32,5000 (interest free for one year) and retiring the accumulated operating debt of $54,000. Might I remind you that this debt was close to $60,000?  So thanks for your support.

As your minister I am here to help with many aspects of church life...it is my privilege to serve with such a committed and common sense group of individuals who are faith filled.  I cherish the variety of ministries with men, women and children.  I look forward to worship each Sunday.   See you in church.  Rev. Sandra

Worshiplude

We want to thank our friends and families for your financial and prayerful support of the Worshiplude trip to Ottawa.  Seven Westminster folk attended Worshiplude this past weekend.  The group included 48 youth and 13 leaders.  We missed our friends and family, and had a great time.  We experienced fabulous winter events, saw some interesting sites, got silly (ride dat pony!), worshiped like it wuz no one's business, ate things our families wouldn't let us survive on for one full weekend, slept in a wonderful church where we also played basketball and more... Without your support, we may not have been able to go, and for that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  We hope you enjoy visuals that will be presented before worship on Sunday morning.

Anyone Interested in Quilting?

During February a small group is quilting each Tuesday from 9:30 to 3:00 in the Friendship Room.  All are welcome to join us, including beginners.  After February, we would like to start a regular weekly quilting group at Westminster if people are interested.  We would then also be seeking quilt tops to hand quilt.
