Westminster's Youth May 2009
Newsletter Title
Greetings!

Exciting things are happening at Westminster United Church!

Pamela Mauti has just started a wonderfully dynamic program for youth in grades 6, 7 & 8.  We hope to see those folks in church to experience the fun!

Janet Jones is beginning a new program for youth in high school.  Keep posted for more details.  It's highly recommended to find her on Facebook so youth can be in direct contact.

Karen Farace continues to lead the Christian Education team into a new era.  With the help of our many teachers and assistants (Janice Renzoni, Jackie Pritchard, Heather Craig-Peddie, Marnie Worry, Tom Smith, Mike Renzoni, Abby Tuck, Stephanie Sostar, and others), the children are growing in their knowledge of faith and having so much fun doing it!

This past Sunday the children returned to the sanctuary with a message for some very special people.  They truly enjoyed the journey they were on!

Something new in Sunday School ~ The Outreach and Social Justice team is leading one session a month.  Their session will focus on teaching our children the purpose of the Mission & Service Fund and their partnerships.  It's a great way of getting the knowledge that, as a church, we are worldwide... helping other nations and other communities, as well as our own.  A big thanks to Jim Lindsay for this wonderful initiative.

As your Christian Education team, we are still in need of volunteers!  Though we would like to have even more teachers, assistants are just as important to keep those scissors in safe hands, the glue from getting on clothes and the fun from getting wild and crazy.  The children really do enjoy their time in Sunday School, but because our numbers are increasing, we do need assistants to help the kids do harder parts of their crafts.  If you're interested in helping in any way, please contact Karen.  We're not looking for a lifetime commitment, just the odd Sunday here and there.

Vacation Bible School?  What?  Another one?  How is last year's VBS going to be topped?  Well, we need some help!  If you would like to participate in any way (either before the VBS week in preparing crafts and planning or during the week with assisting, cleaning or planning) we want to hear from you!  Please send us an email!

What else is there?  Goodness gracious!  March is upon us.  We are in the season of Lent.  Though many of us give up something for Lent, consider taking something up, too!  More time for reflection, prayer or possibly just more time for love.  Get the kids involved!  Their best teacher is you!

Blessings in this season of Lent,
Your Christian Education team
PARENTS' PORCH

Church and Home:  Working Together
Church focuses on spiritual development of children.  School focuses on mental development.  Sports team focus on physical development.  Doesn't quite sound right, does it?
God didn't make kids in interchangeable pieces.  Kids are whole human beings.  They develop as whole human beings, not in fragments.  So the faith journey is not something that happens only on Sundays.  The faith journey is a life experience.  Both church and home have a part.
God's plan for children's spiritual development includes a community of faith.  In the Old Testament, family and community life centered around celebrating the great things God had done.  Children were right there in the middle of the celebration.  Parents were their primary teachers, and the classroom was the active, multi-sensory environment in which they lived.  Whether they realize it or not, parents have far more influence on their children's developing faith than a teacher or church program does.
Church and home work together in a child's life.  If kids see the truth of the Sunday school lesson at work in their parents, they'll believe it's true.  When "love one another" seem abstract, parents can show how to put feet on the concept.  When "forgive one another" seem impossible, what better demonstration than family relationships?
Parents and children's ministry workers share the goal of seeing kids develop personal relationship with Jesus and grow to be more and more like Him.  It's not "either/or."  It's "both/and."  Both church and home.
"Speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ"  (Ephesians 4:15).

Need a Minute?

Have some fun picking a name for Westminster's hockey team!  There will be a box for entry submissions in the sanctuary on Sunday.  Remember to write "Team Name ="  and "My Name=".

Pick up some magnetic sheets (can be purchased at the dollar store) to create magnetic messages.  What you need to do:  remove the sticky top sheet off the magnetic sheet and replace it with paper which you have written a variety of words on.  Cut each word out.  Create fun, loving and silly messages to be read by the whole family.  (Don't forget to have a container handy to put the left over words in!)
