WESTMINSTER UNITED CHURCH
 COMMUNITY OBSERVES LENT

A MESSAGE FROM REV. SANDRA
Greetings!

Join us tonight at 7:30 p.m. for a brief Ash Wednesday Service to mark the beginning of the Lenten Season. This service will include the imposition of ashes if you so wish to observe this ancient Christian ritual.

The Christian observance of Lent lasts 40 days.  The 40 days remind us that our forebears, the Hebrew people, wandered in the dessert for 40 years and that Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days and nights. This 40 day period of time is meant to be used for spiritual renewal and spiritual discipline. Many people choose to give up something for Lent or choose to adopt a new habit or life giving attitude that will help to make them healthier and whole people. Think of something you wish to change about your life... bring it to God in prayer and ask for spiritual discipline. Tonight following the service we begin our Lenten Devotion Study and this study will continue until Easter on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. The week preceding Easter is called Holy Week ~ April 5-11.  Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday April 5th, the biblical account of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. On that Sunday, April 5th, we will have two special events. In the morning at 10:30 a.m. there will be a service of Communion, Baptism and Confirmation. In the evening at 7:00 p.m. we will have an outstanding actor from Theatre Kingston retell the Gospel of Mark. This is an amazing production. Free will offering.

Good Friday ~ our Service will be held at 7:30 with special readers and special music as we remember the last day of Jesus' life.

Easter, April 12th, is a Feast Day of the Church upon which we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus. Sunrise service and pot-luck breakfast 8:00 a.m. at Steve Brown's farm on the south side of # 9 and 10:30 worship at Westminster.

Other Events you may wish to attend to observe Lent.
The Orangeville Ministerial Service and Lenten Lunches each Wednesday beginning today at Tweedsmuir Presbyterian Church.
Each denomination takes turns providing worship and lunch each week.
March 4th ~ ome and support Westminster United Church as Rev. Sandra and student Mary Elizabeth lead worship and Joan Borden and Barbara Cooper provide the music. The U.C.W. and helpers (the gentlemen) provide the wonderful lunch.

The Walk of the Cross on Good Friday... check out our website for details.

Many thanks to the Worship and Sacrament Action Group for coordinating readers and to Joan Borden for coordinating the musicians who are helping through this Lenten season.

See you in church.......
