Westminster's Youth November 2008
Hot off the press
Greetings!

A message from your Christian Education team...

Our last meeting welcomed Karen Farace as our new facilitator. Karen is a Sunday School teacher and is a great leader.  Congratulations Karen!

We are looking to fill the role of "Sunday School Co-ordinator".  This volunteer position takes some time and commitment.  The C.E. team is willing to fully support the person who fills this position.  This role includes, but is not limited to, scheduling Sunday School teachers, reviewing curriculum and being a voice for the children. For more information, please contact the church office or a team member.

Are you curious about what is involved in leading a Sunday School class?  Ask someone on the team if you can observe a session.  You'll be helping our little Christians grow and you just may learn something too!

Wondering more about your own spiritual growth?  The United Church of Canada offers many programs to help you in your journey.  For more information, you can visit the United Church of Canada website or ask someone on the C.E. team for more information.

Yours truly,

Heather Craig-Peddie, Chris Dyer, Christy Doner, Karen Farace, Janet Jones, Jackie Pritchard, Janice Renzoni,  Tom Smith, Stephanie Sostar, Fran Walker, Lydia Williams and Marnie Worry

PARENT'S PORCH

THINGS ARE LOOKING UP

Kids are born optimistic.  They just are.  So how come so many of them end up disgruntled, disappointed in themselves, even depressed?  Sadly sometimes parents pull the optimism rug out from under their own kids.  We don't mean to.  Most of the time we don't realize we're doing it.
It all comes down to talk.  If we tell them they can be star soccer players when they know they can't run as fast as the other kids, maybe we're not helping all that much.  What if they get out on the field and they are yards behind the pack - game after game?  Now they're questioning our grip on reality or telling themselves they're failures because they can't do what we said they could do.  Hopelessness and helplessness set in.
Now, don't think you can never encourage a child to keep trying or to pursue a goal.  Just be straightforward about cause and effect.  Some things take work; they don't happen just because you want them to.  Help your kids learn to tell themselves the truth:  "I don't run as fast as the other kids, but I'm a great blocker."  "Reading is hard for me, but I'm the best math student in the class."
When kids know the truth, they have hope.  As long as they have hope, they can keep depression at bay.  Be intentional about the way you talk to your kids so they'll learn the right way to talk to themselves.
"But you have been my hope, O Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth" (Psalm 71:5)

A Prayer

God made us a family,
We need one another, We love one another, We forgive one another
We work together, We play together, We worship together
Together we use God's word, Together we grow in Christ, Together we love all people
Together we serve our God, Together we hope for Heaven
These are our hopes and ideals, Help us to attain them, O God, Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

NEED A MINUTE?

Suppertime again and you've grown an extra leg or two?  What can they do?

Are they ready to take on the challenge of setting the table?
Make a centrepiece
Fold napkins in a unique shape

Modelling clay and popsicle sticks are great tools to have around to help pass some time...
